Sending my paperwork in tomorrow for arbitration. My dealership refuses to replace the manifold without a code even though the TSB clearly says "one or more" of the conditions. I've got 2 out of 3, but no code. We'll see how this goes. I wish I was more mechanically inclined and could rig the code.

Good Luck. Please let me know how it turns out. I even brought my own video of the engine knocking sound showed it to the service advisor but still have to leave it for a few days to hopefully duplicate the issue. With the warm weather here I bet you the sound will not come up when it's there. Time for Toyota to have a RECALL on this issue.!!

When I had my one and only knocking event, it sounded like everyone else's description. It happened 2 weeks before my last scheduled maintenance and when I brought the TSB in with me the Service Mgr. seemed perplexed.
When they were done they offered me the engine mount. This reminds me, I haven't heard back, gotta call.
Had no events since and my one and only was in reasonable temperate weather.

This is the sound I'm getting. Warning: Sound coming from the engine is for mature audience only.

VIN B5340002. Got the noise for the first time at 11,000 miles. Car acted like it wasn't getting gas, and was knocking like the youtube video. The night before, I remember moving the car into the garage, then hitting the start button to shut the engine down. This issue happened the very next startup. Temps were 60+ in the garage, 70+ outside.

This is a little concerning - I just went to test drive both a prius and prius v ... and when the salesmen and i jumped in the priuv v - 80 degrees F outside ... hit the start button and it knocked like crazy - wouldn't stop on it's own... had to shut it down ... restart was ok... went for test drive. being it's new and setting on a lot - i wonder if it had something to do with 12v bat maybe being a bit low? intake makes sense though - if they have long runners for tuning the intake - cold ambient temps - the gas can re-condense before going into cylinder - this happened on my old s-10 2.5L ...for that though - it would usually just foul a plug and then clear itself up... not knock itself to death. clearly some other issue going on --

That is hilarious.... guess it was just a matter of time before it happened on the lot. Worrisome though because the new models should have the updated intake manifold. Guess there might be something else to this issue...

Mine just did this the other day, loud knocking and shaking. 55F outside temp. 9578 miles. No check engine light. I'll have them check it at 10,000, but I know what they are going to say. I just want it put in the service record for the future.

I took my car in for the 10k service and told the service manager about the cold start knock and wanted it logged for future information. He looke my VIN and said that the motor mount TSB applied to my car, he ordered the parts, when they come in they'll call and I get it fixed.

I don't understand how a possible bad motor mount would anything to do with the cold start noise and vibration, but it's a start.

That is the cheapest route for them. If it was the violent knock that has been described here... it won't fix that. The mount did quite things up for me though, glad it was done.

He shrugged it off as never having experienced it before. The look on his face was priceless. In an email after the drive, I asked him to check with his service manager. It was something new to them....as the comment.

To me after some hind sight....the ice is started with one of the traction motors....which are AC motors. I wonder if the AC motor didn't try starting the engine backwards.

Other then that, if they use oil pressure to vary the valve timing....then it could be the last time it was shut down, the cm was in a advance state, as opposed to a default retarded start or whatever the case, might be. It would explain why most have said after 15 seconds or so it clears up, as thats about how long it takes to build full oil pressure.

Arbitration works! I went through Toyota's arbitration process, got my car fixed, plus Toyota is sending me $100 for all the trouble. If your dealer isn't fixing the issue just because there's no code shown on the computer, then go through arbitration. You'll have Toyota's regional office calling you in no time to arrange to fix your car!

Gaaaaaah. Has happened to me twice now in the last month, once in the garage at 11C/52F and the other outside at 9C/48F. Booked in for its 60000km service next Friday, I'll ring them and let them know in advance.

Totally have this issue. Just found out about the T-SB, called the dealer this morning since it was cooler here last night and told them this was happening, I played dumb like I didn't know about the T-SB. The guy on the phone then said, hmm I see here theres a T-SB for long periods below 32 Degrees, but it hasn't been that cold. We'd have to have you leave it with us and we'd test it to try and replciate the problem.

Grrr. I am sure this applies to me i've heard it maybe 4 or 5 times over the past 2 months or so, but tended to shrug it off for some reason (I know thats a dumb move on my part)

Now that its warm out I guess I'll have to wait till fall to try and get them to apply the fix?
Grr. I'm going to at least like others said mention it at my next oil change so they take note.

I take it it didn't throw a code (warning light)?

Even if it didn't, I would contact the Customer Service Rep @ the dealer and explain the situation referring to this thread and the T-SB. That made all the difference for me @ my dealership. Good luck!

No it has never shown a warning light on the dash when it does this.
Should I even try to call the service department back since they instantly wanted to do a test or should I cut them out since they want to verify and do a bunch of testing.
