Things people say about your Prius C that make you ROLL your eyes at them...

Haha!!

Someone told me recently that they are "anti-hybrid" and that they mock people who drive them. It's just a car! I don't understand the hate, especially now that there are 4 million Prii out there successfully avoiding gas stations around the world.

My boss complained that I'm paying less in gas taxes than him. I simply told him that he's welcome to buy a hybrid too. (But he's got enough money to afford extra gas and extra taxes, so he'll likely stick with his Land Rover). Same boss also always makes corny jokes about my "electric" car (e.g. "I left my coffee maker plugged into your car, make sure you unplug it before you drive off")

My uncle asked my boyfriend why he "let me" get "one of those green cars." I was annoyed by the disparaging tone towards green cars, and the fact that he suggested I need my boyfriend's permission to buy something with my own money. But that's a whole different discussion...

 

They mock US? I'm already laughing at those jealous jerks with their insistence on paying twice and three times the fuel cost. And I'll be laughing even harder when gas hits $5, $6, $7 per gallon.

 

Oh, it's so cuuuttteee! Really gets me riled. Only the AMC Gremlin and Pacer are cute!

 

"Oh.. You couldn’t afford the regular Prius so you bought the C?"

 

"I know. It's an unfair system. It would be much fairer to charge by miles traveled and weight instead. Heavier vehicles cause much more road damage. So, maybe I'd pay 0.1cent per mile for my 2,500lb car while an owner of a 5,000lb car that causes sixteen times as much damage to the road would pay sixteen times as much."

"I paid $x extra in sales tax so I could pay a little less in fuel tax and a lot less to OPEC."

"That must be somebody else's. My car's a hybrid. It runs on gasoline. It just does it quite efficiently so it costs me 10 cents per mile instead of 30 or 40."

"Because he's not stupid and he's still young enough to care what happens to gas prices in the future."

"No, I could afford the regular Prius. I just couldn't afford both the Prius and a hit-man."

 

There's no need to give people snarky answers. Just be honest. Like "nope, it goes up to 112 mph." Or "I got one because I always wanted one."

 

Why should snarks get all the fun?

 

Because when you give sarcastic answers or roll your eyes it clearly shows them that they've struck a nerve (and that's exactly what they want to do). It also just makes you look like a douchebag. Come on, this is Communications 101.

But one of the male PU truck (Toyota) drivers asked to sit in the car: "This has better seat & legroom than my truck - how's the MPG?" The look on his face when I told him was priceless!! And I don't even try to hypermile...

 

A lady I work with was trying to mock my Gen II Prius.

Funny.

She drives a Mercedes Class C (aka a "taxi cab").

But really, many people don't realize the Prius C is a real Prius. Some comments that go straight up my nose are that the 'C' isn't a real hybrid, the 'C' is just a fancy Yaris, or that every Prius (C) owner is an environmentalist.

 

Most comments/questions people have are light-hearted or curious for which can be nice conversation starters, if you so wish. Informing people, if possible, seems most sustainable.

 

I think he is referring to insensitive people who ask insensitive questions as the cleaning device. Not you! I think this is a funny thread and hopefully, it stays that way!

 

I've been around the Prius community for a little while now so I've seen and heard it all. When you respond with snappy answers you are stooping to their level and giving them the satisfaction they sought. When that happens, you're officially no more civilized than them. Any jibe can be rebutted with a factual and tactful answer that will make them look like the donkey, not both of you. Try me.

 

You gotta realize the vast majority of people only know that the Prius has something to do with a battery, so they make assumptions. The two things I have to educate them on if they ask about the car is first that it doesn't plug in, and second that it's slow. Once I clear those issues up they usually say wow! I may need to look at one when I buy my next car! Yes, the PiP is mentioned, but these people tend to be turned off by that concept... so far! Baby steps!
