^ It amazes me that so many businesses use Windows xp when support is going to be pulled in about a year - twelve years after it was released. I've seen studies that it's a lot more expensive than running Windows 7.

I've used XP, too. It's actually a really good version of Windows (yes, such a thing exists). If I was still on XP when my PC died, I would be on a Windows machine right now instead of the Mac I'm happily using.

    ^ Steve,

I was on xp for a decade. Bought a Vista upgrade and after hearing the horror stories, did not do it or I likely would have bought Apple (I had a nightmarish xp upgrade.)

Tried the Windows 8 - Consumer Review for a few days, but back to Windows 7 - nothing wrong with it. Just would like to do a dual boot so some legacy appls will still work plus not have to be forced to do Windows 8 Metro navigation immediately.

Lots of complaints about the removal of the Start Button in Windows 8. Some say Microsoft is getting rid of it to appear more Mac-like but will it function Mac-like? There is a difference.

I'm pretty happy with Windows 7.

It's happening across the board. Ubuntu moved away from traditional menus and a start button a couple of releases ago, introducing the Unity interface. Likewise with Gnome, which is no longer the default for Ubuntu. The new Gnome is much more tablet-like.

While many attribute it to being Mac-like, the real driving force is the integration of computers, tablets, and cell phones. All of the operating system UIs are being positioned to work with touch screens as well as the more traditional mouse and keyboard.

I think those study numbers are exaggerated in order to sell 7.

At least with Linux you can pick your own desktop manager if you don't like the one it comes with. Until my old laptop died I was using LXDE on it. Simple and lightweight.

If there are still lots of xp users, I wonder if Windows 8 will sell more Windows 7. ;)

I'll figure the Windows 8 navigation, but seeing a number of marathon-length threads objecting to it, there is definitely resistance.

Or run several at the same time if you are one of those people who just can't decide.

If it's another fiasco, it will be for other reasons. Windows 8 is small, faster, and more reliable than previous versions of Windows, but the desktop user interface problem (Start Button) could either entice people not to upgrade or even go with another OS.

    April 8th 2014.

Businesses tend to be slow to upgrade because they need all of their existing hardware and software to work.
