I've spent just about $600 in the last 4 months since I picked up my car. Considering my last car got half the mileage, I've saved at least $600 on gas. The reason why I say at least is because my other car is a Highlander which gets about 17 mpg. So every time we use the Prius instead of the Highlander I'm getting triple the mileage. So, conservatively I will save over $1,800 for the year. ​

If people talk about a $5,000 differential for a hybrid, then I will make up that difference in less than 3 years and save some wear and tear on the Highlander which is getting up there in mileage. The longer I can wait to trade in the Highlander the more the technology will improve. ​

I notice on fuelly your gallons you put in are pretty high. How much more gas are you getting when you top off?
I personally never top off.

 

It has been my expierence that after the first click when the pump shut off you
can still nurse in another 2 to 2.1 gallons of gas until you have standing fuel
at the top of the filler neck where you can't get one more drop in....

True tank capacity is probably 13.5 - 14 gallons.

 

I don't really try to top off. I usually go to the first click and then round off to the next dollar. Last night I must have been daydreaming a little, because I probably put in about $.90 more after the first click. I ended up running it to 11 gallons even ... easy to remember and calulate. I was paying with a debit card so the total didn't really matter.

One thing I did notice was that when I filled up, my cruising range was exactly 600 miles.

 

Gotcha.

I don't top off and the most I end up putting in is between 10-10.5 gallons. With my 2011 i was in that range most of the time. With the 2012 I only went over 10 gallons once. I am usually in the 9-9.5 gallon range but I may put more miles this tank and be over 10g

We have had a heat wave here on Long Island in the last few days and I really noticed that the car seems to warm up a lot quicker and run smoother. As an example, when I get to the start of the highway a couple of miles into the trip, I'm usually at about 48 - 50 mpg. Yesterday, I was at 60 mpg.​

I am already screwed up driving my wife's Highlander. I forget to use the remote to open the door, put the key into the ignition, and find myself looking towards the center of the dashboard for info. Man do I miss that car!!!​

This is absolutely MY BEST tank ever.

Got a stunning overall average of 3.74 l/100km ( 62.89 mpg ) in my 65942 km ( 40 970 U.S. miles ) odometer.

 

I'm only getting 43 mpg...summer...A/C on.... short trips. Actually it's about the same in the winter too...maybe down to 39 mpg. Got my tires inflated to 42 psi front and 40 rear. I got an avg mpg of 54 one time and that was on a 500 mi round trip. That was my best ever.

 

Thats an amazing tank! I don't think I've ever heard of someone getting such good FE on one tank. Tell us your secrets! ;-)

 

First of all, I would like you take a look to the cost for mile.
Talking in $, I averaged $0.111/mile: that's a result still not comparable to the ones you get in the U.S., even if I try to hypermile very hard. Thankfully you have a grat advantage regarding the fuel cost for gallon, that is less than half the one we have here in Italy and in Europe. Anyway, I won't start this topic here.
Regarding my hypermiling techniques, it's full of topics here that describes what is better to optimize FE.
About that, I just sum the followings :
1) sweet accelerations, but not too sweet: around 1600 rpm is ok, just take a look to your SGII.
2) do whatever you can to break the less that you can.
3) P&G every time is possible, following the traffic flow.
4) avoid street holes when possible ( I don't know if there's an English name for those, I hope you get what I mean).
4) avoid short and heavy traffic commutes whenever you can.
5) use the front car tail to reduce the air flow friction, when possible and safe.
6) avoid air conditioning, when possible. This is very annoying for FE, it's better considering open windows, at least if you're not having a long highway trip.

That said, please consider, that the weather conditions (of course, you can't control that) are very important too. for example, in my last tank, I experienced 3,4 l/100km with rain and cold weather, and a stunning 2,5 l/100km with warm temps, dry roads and no wind (S1stage included).
More, please take a look to commutes length: my typical commute is the trip from and to work. This is a 33 km long commute, long enough to reduce the high fuel consumption due to S1 stage. Once, I tried to reset my trip B once S1 was completed. Well... at the end I was averaging a 2.3 l/100km in a 25 km trip.
And finally, this commute is mostly urban and suburban driving, the place where our Prius express in their best FE behavior.
I hope you all can appreciate what I wrote, it would be great if you had something to say about, I'm open to every kind of comment.

Do you try to stay at 1600 RPM at every speed you are at or just when you are accelerating?

 

Thanks! Actually I've learned English for 4 years at school when I was younger. Recently I started watching English movies, I guess this helps me a lot.

Well, my urban and suburban trip requires low speed because of traffic lights, traffic and so on. Rarely I have a constant cruising speed for the same reason. My trip naturally requires P&G technique ( just to follow tre traffic flow and urban roads layout), that gives the best results in FE.
So, I would say that if I have to take a long trip at constant speed, I would keep a 80-85 km/h speed (that is around 50 mph I guess). At this speed you have around 1180 rpm (soc 60%). Although that's not the best for engine efficiency, it should the best cruising speed regarding FE (consider higher air friction at higher speeds).

I'm now on 4.4 l/100km (displayed) target but I think I'll finish somewhere around 4.5 l/100km (4.8 l/100km calcd). Still it's above 50 mpg target on non optimal conditions (short 10km trips, traffic jam, 23 kmh average speed).

Off-topic:
I'm going to visit Italy in September. Is 1.7 Eur/l average fuel cost or you have one with low cost that you allways visit? I will travel from Brennero to 100km south of Rome (or Tuscany - we don't know yet) so I will have to refill within highway.
