Planing CanView and BMS+ conversion with lithium

    I am considering replacing my Canview V4 with a Duinomite Mega http://www.olimex.com/dev/DUINO/DUINOMITE/DuinoMite-UM-1-03.pdf . It has a VGA output and It has Canbus comms. Also thinking of using some arduinos with can shield to measure my 70 cells and send the data via canbus to my Duinomite and display it on my Lillyput screen. Also data log the cell values and save to a SD card. Not sure if I will be able to use the touch screen function. Since i will be programming it using mmbasic it may not be as fast as the Canview. But it will be an interesting project. Connect a 4 channel relay board like this one Four 4-Channel 5V Relay Module Expansion Board For Arduino PIC AVR ARM MCU DSP | eBay to drive my PHEV contactor.
    At some point I will start a new thread - A Canview replacement with Duinomite Mega.

    Hi John,
    Reading your Prius config description 1 question arises. If you have such good results using BMS+ and your A123 pack then why do you keep 2 x Enginer kits? Wouldn't it better to increase batteries bank for BMS+?

    Hi Jacek,

    My two Enginer kits Version 5 connected in parallel work very efficiently in charging a A123 20ah battery pack which has a flat voltage/SoC curve as opposed to the NiMH. So due to having a A123 battery pack the two Enginer kits make good range extenders. My A123 20ah battery pack does not have enough range to get me to work and back without the Enginer kits. The Enginer kits keep my A123 pack DOD (depth of discharge) to about 50% so the A123 should last longer. In any case nobody would be interested in Australia in buying a Frankenstein Enginer kit. It has been so modified and it is ugly with warts and all but it is reliable. My Enginer box was doubled in height allowing more air circulation for cooling in summer. I will post a photo tomorrow. I have put so much work into it I really do not want to get rid of it now it works so well.
    My A123 pack is rated for 60 amps continuous. My Enginer kits will put out about 30 amps continuous. So together they can output 90 amps continuous which is good. This pretty much allows for worst load scenario of driving up a long hill in forced EV using up about 90 amps for a long time.
    I have now almost reached 3000 km of forced EV driving using my ICE kill switch.
    I have been toying with the idea of showing my Prius at the NSW electric car exhibition but I am worried that someone will film it and post it on YouTube with the title "Is this the ugliest PHEV ever?

    Maybe it's a little off topic here, but have you ever consider paralleling A123 (for high current events) with RFE cells (to increase capacity) just cell to cell? Or do you think they differ so much in charge/discharge characteristics that it could arrise problems?
    I have seen your Enginer enclosure mod before. I'm very satisfied with my 6kW Enginer sytem as well, but as my Prius factory warranty expires soon, I am going to look after more "aggressive" system. What would you suggest for GenIII Prius. OK it's also offtopic. Maybe I should contact you via PM?

    The A123 and RFE cells are like chalk and cheese. I recommend getting the 10kwh PIS kit but it seems that the latest PIS kits are being sold without the ECM assembly which spoofs the ECM or ICE ECU so it uses less gas. It can do 800MPG with the ECM assembly but without it will only get about 100MPG. So BEWARE?
    Otherwise you could use a ICE kill switch which will give you infinite MPG if they never gave you a ECM assembly. The ICE kill switch should work on any Prius regardless of generation.

    On evtv Its told that a123 stopt producing these cells

    I think Its Because they have a new cell and Because low production are now only doing this in the us and no longer in korea.

    with a phev you dont visit the gas station a lot :p

    so after doing 2000+km and still 23% full i visited the gas station and ended up with 1,7 liter per 100km or 1 liter on 58 km.
    or 138mpg US gallons ( if i am correct )

    I just thought I would post a update. The system is working well. I had took a trip to California in the end of March and after returning from the trip I had about 3 bars left on the tank when I returned. I did not use the extra battery on the trip not knowing any place to plug in. 2 weeks ago I finally put gas in, I was making a trip down to Las Vegas. I attached 2 pictures. One of the mileage for the tank (Prius calculation 99.9mpg , 1282miles). About 350 of those miles were from the last freeway trip in March at about 43mpg.

    The Can View screen trip I reset a short time after I returned and included some freeway driving maybe 15%. 864 miles at 255mpg.

    Overall I am very satisfied with this route.I do need to do the fan Mod for the oem pack. It gets hot. I leave my cover I made off of the battery pack to try and keep things a little cooler. I will probably add a fan for the aux battery also for the summertime. It gets in the low 100s here.

    After i read all the previous post of this topic i am very interested in your mod and the result. As i know the CanView was discontinued, what should you suggest to replace that? Would you mind to share the details of your current system? what equipment you use? the wiring of the system? Thank you very much!

    When the car is sitting out in the sun all day and I am driving in OOG mode I saw the battery get to 132 F. I do not think it is because of the added battery just driving in OOG mode and the high ambient temps.

    I forgot to add that when I filled up in the last post the actual MPG was 124.8 for the 1282 miles :)

    Hi Kenny, It is a very good way to go. You do not need the Can View, It just gives you alot more to look at. You could use a Scan Gauge or there is a APP for Android phones called "torque" you could use. It would be just repeating what I said already to tell about my setup. But it is based off of the Cal Cars setup, but a lower voltage and using the BMS+ from Norm. If you have a few questions after reading everything here and on the Cal Cars web site I will try to answer those.[/quote]

    Hi Mr. Plugin,

    Thanks for your reply, i'm not really sure i was 100% understood the Cal Cars setup, i think it was a bit complicated for me....sorry. Do you have any simple solution that show me how your system work, so i can just have a test and do it myself to my Gen2 Prius! Thanks!

    You have two parts:

    High voltage
    You "just" have to connect on the oem_nimh_pack a lithium_pack. Between these 2 packs insert a HRC fuse (100-125A dc240v) and at least a contactor (Ev100 or Ev200).
    This contactor is powered (with 9-14v dc on coil side) when driving and NOT when charging the lithium pack.
    Add a charger (Elcon for exemple) in order to charge the lithium cells.

    If using A123 cells use 70 of them serially connected. If others lithium cells 72.
    So during driving common voltage will be between 240 and 215v.

    Low voltage.
    You have to use bms2. This device is connected on the Prius Can bus, near le nimh ecu.
    It is controlled by the driver via the can bus by:
    -a canview or
    -a pc with a dongle or
    -a duinomite
    -...

    Controling this bms2 let you use essentially two modes : deplete or not_deplete the lithium pack.

    Bms2 (or an other device connected on the can bus) is necessary so the Hsd will use more then the 6,5Ah capacity.

    Yesterday I done a nice test drive.

    Using OOG mode, the speed was between 50 and 55 km/h ( 31 to 34 mph), average 44 km/h.

    The EV range have been more then 100 km ( 62 miles):

    Used 8.3 kWh, 36.8 Ah. Starting voltage 240v, End voltage 220v. Lowest cell voltage was 2.98v. Outside temp was 25°C.

    My plugin : 9 kWh lithium A123 and 1,3 kWh nimh.

    Is anyone else also logging lithium batt temp?
    With three hot days i see as high as 46 celcius
