Hello, I've only had mine for about 2 weeks now and still driving my other vehicles. I will start driving my PiP regularly as soon as I get my plates, which then I can finally submit my HOV lane green sticker application to DMV. So I'm still learning this car as this is very different than my previous commuter car that I got 6 years of carpool usage with (06' Civic Hybrid).
Anyway with my previous commuter (Civic) I could go with no fuel bars all the way to Culver City (past LAX) from Huntington Beach (42 miles) and still had about 1.5 gallons left in the tank.

My question is on our PiP (without considering EV driving) how many gallons do you have left when the last bar starts flashing?

I rarely reach the flashing point. Once you exceed 700 miles on tank, it's all gravy at that point. There's no desire to push.

This particular tank only took 7.9 gallons to refill...

I would have driven more, but the next day was July 4th. So, I wanted a full tank for celebrating, despite not reaching the flash yet.

Thanks for the input "dark_prius" and "john" so about 2 gallons that's awesome. Yeah I wasn't trying to run out of fuel. But a bit nervous since I didn't know. I wouldn't want to use the rest of my EV on the freeway! Can you imagine if we were CNG owners? I would be panicking looking for a CNG fuel station! LOL.
So far I've been tripping people out on the freeway and gunning it in "Power" mode. I see the look on some people's faces, like: (Huh? I didn't know that Prius's can accelerate that fast!) You should see how fast I go through fuel on my 410HP supercharged S4 Stasis! That's the only thing that bugs me so far in a Prius. You get idiots on the freeway tailgating you acting like you're slowing them down, then you look at your speedo and you're going 80 mph and they are tailgaiting you still.

No! :) But I was nervous on the freeway and not knowing! (I've been sooooo busy with work and stuff I've not had a chance to read the manuals (boy there are a lot of manuals!!!) So if I knew the capacity I could figure it out on my own. I just traded an SL 500 convertible and a Civic Hybrid for mine and got 0% financing from TMCC for the remainder. I love this car so far! It's too bad the HOV sticker is only till Jan. 2015 this time around. It was much longer when I had the yellow stickers for my Civic Hybrid.

I traded in the 06 HCH also. I used to run it down to all fuel lights off and knew I probably had about 60 miles remaining.

Since my PiP gets refueled only once a month, I've only pushed it to the flashing bar and then immediately refilled. When I did this on the last fill up I put in a little over 8 galllons.

i don't think the prius is like the civic technically, so i wouldn't risk running out of gas.

When the bar starts flashing, what does the "Distance to empty" display show?

25 miles is typical for me, but it varies.

My last fuel bar started flashing today. I checked the dash and it said I had a distance of 15 miles until empty. I filled up and my PiP took 8 gallons of fuel. Full tank is 10.6 gallons - 8 to fill up = 2.6 gallons left. Why does the car only show 15 miles remaining? By a quick estimate I should have 133 miles remaining (51 MPG x 2.6 gallons remaining in the tank). My only guess is Toyota is being very conservative and doesn't want us running out of gas. Any thoughts?

If you want to know why that decision was made, there's over 10 years of posts stating reasons for running out of gas being bad and how often people do it anyway. Just acknowledge the indicators and you'll be fine.

How far are you going per tank?

For me, it's been +500 miles. That makes it infrequent enough to call it good. For that matter, it's more than I got with my 2010. So, even better.

There is no downside to getting gas, while there are many downsides to running out. I posted several in a link above.
If you get gas at two pips, none of those disasters ever happen to your car.

Lot of cars have a reserve for people that like to push it. My 2010 Ram has a 26 gallon tank. Drove it till the low fuel light flashed yesterday as a test and was only able to put in 22 gallons of E85.

This is consistent with all my past car brands too. With all the gauging uncertainties, highly variable fuel consumption conditions, drivers inattentive to fuel level, and long stretches of road without fuel available, they essentially must do this to keep out-of-fuel incidents infrequent, and to make sure the customers have no one to blame but themselves.
