Does anyone know how much of the traction battery can you recharge while driving long distances ?

So, once the traction battery is fully depleted, can you actually fully recharge it if you are driving long distances at highway speed ? if so, how long does it take to fully recharge the battery.

    Thanks,
    Dan

you can fully recharge the battery, but not on the highway. it isn't programmed to do that. it wouold use more gas than electric created. the only way to do it to a great extent is long downhill runs. there's no free lunch.:)

In my current PRIUS 2011, if I drive long enough, the traction battery gets fully recharged while driving on the highway / while the gasoline engine is on.

If you drive very long distances on the highway (lets say 200 miles), wouldn't the traction battery be fully recharged like my current PRIUS ?

i'm not sure why your current prius is fully charging on the highway. i never saw that in my 08 and have never seen it mentioned here before. perhaps it's 200 miles slightly downhill? also, that's about 1% of what it would take to fill the pip battery from empty.

I suspect it would fully charge coming down off Donner Summit (7200 ft 2200m) to Sacramento. (25ft 8m)

What are you defining as full? If 60 percent is full then yes hwy speeds charge the battery to full. (in the gen3)

    No.

Ordinary highway cruising after depletion will result in HV operation very much like the model without a plug... it will topoff to a particular kWh level, then utilize the rest for great MPG.

And I know this firsthand, having already driven close to that distance non-stop.

I would hazard a guess.... Since I can go from a half full, non plug in, to a maxed out HV battery with a steep 600 ft drop (ICE spinning using no gas) . I would guess a PIP would take about 2500 ft steep drop to do the same.Any one done it??? ....

what is who defining as full? you'll have to ask the op. i define 'fully recharged' (op's words) as full bars. that would be 100% of the display and whatever of the actual battery. how can 60% of anything be full?

because in the GenIII 60% is as full as it gets via charging from the ICE

I thought we were talking about the PIP. If we aren't, every thing I have said is wrong and I apologize for wasting your time.

i see, but, 'as full as it gets' is still not full, it just won't allow it to fill anymore for whatever reason. in the pip, i ddon't think the engine will charge the battery to any great extent. 60% of the non pip battery is probably it's 'happy place'. i don't consider that full, i wonder if the op does.:)

100%, but only during down hill driving.
