Edit (3/2/13) - The current update of Android Entune app seems to have fixed this.

The Android Entune app keeps its icon in the Notification Bar constantly. It doesn't belong there, according to Android user interface design standards.

The Entune icon typically displays the connectivity status of the app, even when the Android phone is miles away from the vehicle and the information is irrelevant. Status changes are a common event and do not merit notification. The notification takes up space, distracts the user from important notifications, and at times has pushed more important notifications off my screen.

If Entune feels the user should know about its status, it should be displayed as a widget that the user can place, and/or be a user-configurable option to place in the notifications.

    The Android UI standards state:
If the app is asked to do something that requires connectivity, and it's not connected, then an error message is the proper response, and a notification could arguably be reasonable. But not if the app is quiescent.

And if the notification stays in the app, the user should be able to turn it off. The Android Developers Design Guide states:

    You could...cough...cough...get an iPhone?

Or you might try the iPhone trick. In Setup there is a place to put in VPS or DUN login for Entunes. If you do this then you don't need Entunes running on the phone. At least that is the case with iPhone and I'd bet it will work with the Android.

I'd rather ... choke ... choke ... fight Entune than iTunes, thanks. :)
The Android does have the ability to add a VPN. Got a link to instructions?

But mostly I use Entune to turn on the charger (Plug-in Prius) when it's on the timer for 2 am and I decide I need it sooner than tomorrow. Or to check on the state of charge. And that needs the app running, as do Remote Climate and Vehicle Finder.

iTunes is easy and fun but stay away from iCloud.

You add it on the Prius not on the Android. If you go into the car's Bluetooth setup and to connected devices and then details on Bluetooth devices, there is a line that asks about setting up VPN/DUNS (or something to that effect). That sub-menu then asks for your Entunes ID and PWD. If you put them in, you do not need to have Entunes running on your phone. This works for iPhone.

Be interesting to see if it works for Androids also.

That would obviously require Entunes but it sounds like you do that away from the car. Log into Entunes, do your PIP biz and log off of Entunes to get the notice off on phone.

Doesn't work. The little diva still puts up notifications when logged out.

And if it did work, I'd have to log back in, which requires typing my email address and password since the app doesn't remember any of that unimportant stuff.

The notification can be killed by pulling down on the notification bar, tapping the Entune notification which opens the app, and exiting. But I hate to give it the satisfaction.

Once that's done I believe it'll stay down until the state changes - for example, if I turn Bluetooth off and it starts whining.

Again NOT IN THE ENTUNE APP on the phone....ON THE CAR'S BLUETOOTH SETUP and the car will remember your Entunes ID and PWD in the CAR'S DUN/VPN setup.

What info do you use to enable VPS or DUN login on an iPhone? What is the server name.

    Sorry for the thread jack...☺

The only info needed on the car's Nav/Setup/Bluetooth/Device/Details is the Entunes ID and PWD. It remembers it and uses the iPhone's Bluetooth internet connection to log on to Entunes directly, not via the Entunes app on the phone.

If that also works for the Androids, then people would not need to run the Entunes app on the phone and the annoying message noted in the thread title would not be there.

Thought it would be worth a try.

It's not a message; it's an icon in the area at the top of the screen that is similar to the Windows systray.

I use the Entune app for the PiP remote control and info functions. Going app-less would not work for me, and probably for most other plug-in owners.

    No jury would convict me.

    1. Whatever it is icon, badge, message, angry birds...you see when you open and log on to Entunes on phone.
    2. It apparently bothers people.
    3. For those people who find it annoying, the Prius's Bluetooth setup allows you run Entunes in the car without logging on via the phone app and seeing the annoying whatever it is.

For PIP remote control, when you out of the car, you log on do your remote control and suffer the angry icon as long as you doing remote control. Can't help you there.

A jury of Android owners would convict you. I appreciate your suggestions and interest but if you're not familiar with the Android, you won't understand the issue.

On my 2012 three I went into Phone, List of Paired device, then selected my phone and touched the icone to the right of "connect for internet". Then I added my entunes user name and password. Tested and nothing worked. Then I went back and put a checkbox under Enable DUNs something and that did it. Now my Google Nexus shows a bluetooth hotspot icon and the car shows weather, traffic, gas prices etc without installing the app on the phone.
The response time though is a bit behind time. You click something and wait a good minute before something shows up. And that's with a 4G phone and a good connection (10-16Mb link)

Is it possible to find this VPN/DUNS in the 7.1 system? I just looked at mine and went thru every possible page in the setup and did not find it.

Don't know for sure. On 6" it shows up after a Bluetooth device is added and it is one of the editable items for the device. Find ur device in the the Bluetooth Setup menu and hit the Edit icon on the right and see if you find the VPS/DUN spot where you can enter the Entune PWD and ID.

To be quite honest, the Entune app is utter trash. I will not use it until they rework the entire app. My 7 year old can code better than that.

I do not think they can just update the app. They would need to completely redesign it. The first issue is that it runs in the background and drains battery. Not only that, it randomly checks GPS while on standby. I firmly believe the app was created in order to make Toyota extra revenue and they designed it around that. The default search engine is bing. Really? Who would use bing over google? The best approach they could have taken was to make the dashboard android powered.

I don't understand why it just doesn't tether off a phone and do the usual bluetooth phone connection and nothing else. Why even need an app on the phone? It's buggy as hell :(

Actually it works OK and provides what it advertises, internet access for the car to update Traffic and nav around it, provide Pandor music and internet search, also tied to phone and nav. Those are definitely big upgrade features from the 2009 Ford Synch.

Scary part is that Toyota does not support the iPhone as a Bluetooth internet connection even though it can be made to work. If I had to plug via USB to get internet (Traffic, Pandora, search) which is what Toyota says is the ONLY way an iPhone would work, I would be upset.

It sounds like the battery control and AC part of the Entunes app for PIP owners is issue. Why not just turn it on when you want to start/stop charging or turn on/off AC?

From your statement it could be that the app was originally designed for the iOS and then converted over to android. Many companies take this route rather than redesigning the app entirely. Few issues persist with this, one being that both operating systems deal with variables differently. Moving on, the navigation is complete garbage on the car. If you own an iOS or android powered phone, it would be in your best interest to use google maps. The traffic portion of the app is only appealing to those who travel on major highways.

Pandora and the internet search was what ultimately led me to uninstall the entune app. It is designed so poorly that you have a 3-5 delay between commands. As I stated in my previous message, entune should allow the user to set a default search engine. The approach they took to create this app is not very appealing. I am not the only one who feels this way, take a look at the android app store page - Toyota Entune® - Android Apps on Google Play.
