Are there wiring diagrams anywhere? I'm a bit confused on what wiring harness plug into what. I haven't ripped out my old stereo yet, I'm hoping to do that this weekend but I want to have the harnesses ready to go. Thanks!

Using the ready made harnasses is the way to go.

I had most harnasses because my factory unit had been fitted with a phone-car-kit by the previous owner. I only spliced into the wiring harnass between the ISO-connector and the 'new' headunit so that I can feed my amplified speakersignal into the factory speakerwiring. For the rest I left the wiring intact (all other changes I made, still quiet a few, were related to the phone-car-kit so they have nothing to do with installing the radio.).

Oh, and I added the 68 ohm resistor (68.1 iirc, the E96 range from work, 0.6W, as I only have the E12 range in 0.25W myself<= nerdtalk, disregard if this doesn't make sense to you)

I had a question about the aftermarket wiring harnesses but after looking today and thinking about it I think I have the harnesses wired together correctly. I don't think I have to do the 68 ohm resistor for the stereo itself but possibly for my axxess. I'm not sure where the 68 ohm resistor goes but I have one. anyone know?

I took the easy route, unplugged the plug from the Prius head unit, stuck the 68 ohm resistor into the plug and taped it up. Works fine for me.

What's your setup.. do you have an axxess swc?

Does anyone have an external mic? Where's a good spot to run the wires and mount? I haven't found any sources or literature on a suggestion.

I have a mic. As a beginner, I found it easy to run the wire as below, I know this is begging for pictures, sorry

1)under the big plastic panel on the dash going left,
    2) then all the way to the left, near the window, I could take some of the plastic/fabric panelling of the column off and run the wire under there,
    3) then continuing upwards along the column, past the airbags (CAREFUL), then under the fabric roof of the car at the top of the front windshield.
    4) finally I removed the front seat lightning assembly (it pops out) and grabbed the wire into there
    5) now here you can put the mic into the factory mic areas, what I did was clip it in my sunshade thingy

Ok tried the install without the resistor. When I turn on the headlights or the climate control it cuts power to the stereo. Is this a wiring error or my part or is this what you saw with the axxess and no resistor? I'M STUCK AND MY CAR IS APART, THANKS!

No axxess thinghy and I didn't run it without the resistor, so I don't know the effects. Although I think it just keeps your AC from functioning.

    Can't help, sorry...

    No worries

PROBLEM: I can't see instant mpg/battery status on MFD. On the climate control tab of MFD it says check air conditioning wiring, or something similar. All of the steering wheel controls work. IDEAS?

I did the full install using the 2 wiring harnesses and another for the axxess. I had it all working (or so I thought) until I looked at the MFD. The mfd does show total mpg (but I'm not sure it's accurate). I can hear the engine shut off when I stop and I run on battery at first.

So did you just do the resistor mod into the aftermarket harness into the stock radio? I think I need to do this...

The resistor mod is pretty easy to do. Just be careful stripping the wires, they're very thin. Just coiling the ends of the resistor around both wires was enough for the mfd to start functioning again. This is what I suggest:
Do the resistor mod. This way, you can connect the stock radio "data" plug directly to the Metra 8114 (I think) harness which plugs directly into the axxess and your aftermarket stereo with no additional splicing or anything required. Also, since the mfd won't complain that the stock radio isn't connected, you don't have to use the reverse harness to keep the stock radio powered.

I really suggest that you use the Metra 8114 harness to connect the axxess. I tried splicing it manually and if any of the wires aren't connected properly it might still work, but it causes major headaches. The auto program mapped the buttons completely wrong, but the most frustrating problem was phantom button presses that would change the station or mode completely at random. Using the Metra harness helps you avoid these wiring problems. After I wired the harness, I redid the auto program, and it correctly mapped the buttons and I haven't had any problems with phantom button presses.

I have a 2005 prius with JBL/Nav. My radio is terrible. I want to use the stealth approach to install a single DIN unit, but keep the factory HU connected in as suggested in here. I plan to use the 2 connectors, and as well the steering wheel remote (Axxess??).

My concern is for the NAV audio - will I loose that if I follow the above process?

What about the bluetooth - do I need to get that from the replacement radio/receiver?

    Please advise.

I was looking at the JVC HDR71BT that is advertised for 139$ in Fry's today - shows $189 in Crutchfield. Any remarks about that choice. Any recommendations?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Chiru

Although the old radio is still powered so the MFD won't complain, the wires going to the speakers are connected solely to the new radio. So you will lose NAV audio and built in bluetooth, but yes you can still get bluetooth through your new radio. If you want bluetooth and steering wheel controls, it looks like the JVC HDR71BT has both. The Axxess will work with it and the Prius

Update: I the resistor mod is necessary to get the MFD back online when using the access.

(I drove a couple miles with my dash hanging apart to troubleshoot )

Are you using the Metra 70-8114 or did you splice the wires in?

    Hi guys,
    I was thinking about having this done to my car, was wondering if anyone here does or knows someone that would install a deck (and preferably the steering wheel controls) somewhere near Phoenix, AZ. Ive only installed 1 stereo myself and would be open to trying myself but would like to know if there is a professional around just in case. Maybe a dealer or a private party person that has done this before. This is the deck I was interested in putting in;

    Any help would be appreciated.

So Im ordering both connectors... so even with the

    and the

Amazon.com: Best Kits BHA1761 Radio Wire Harness: Everything Else

If I use the Amazon.com: Metra Axxess ASWC Universal Steering Wheel Control Interface (Black): Car Electronics

I still need the resistor wired in?

I read a bunch on the install with the two adapters hoping I wouldn't have to do the resistor. If it is necessary to get the MFD online with the Metra Axxess, I guess Ill do it. I assume the resistor goes on the same wires as laid out in this thread?

Thanks for the clarification. Theres alot of info and its not super clear on install using the Metra Axxess SWC also...
