Auto lights with rain detection wipers why not?

I have been used to Mercs turning on the auto low beam lights when wipers were activated manually or auto which makes sense as if its raining should you not have your headlights on. So my question Toyota is why have you missed this important safety feature on a car with auto lights and auto wipers?
Is there a way to enable this feature?

Because there's a switch that you can turn yourself if you feel safer or happier with your lights on.

Personally I prefer having the ability to turn my lights on when I feel I need to rather than letting the car do it. I've had auto headlights before and there are times when they don't come on when they actually should - such as in bright fog. By getting used to letting the car do it all the time, you might forget to switch them on manually at times when they are needed.

Some automatic things are great and helpful - such as automatic transmissions, others are a good idea in theory, but often don't work correctly in practice such as auto wipers. And the car that had those was a Merc S class, before you ask :)

I get the point about a manual switch. However this car has Auto Sensing Wipers so if they sense rain the lights should activate too. Rain = Low beam lights for safety so why forget this link between poor visability and rain / lights. I bet Volvo would not have missed this link. However maybe its brighter in Japan when it rains :)
Actually I have had a thought why not have the lights coming on whenever you activate your wipers manual or auto. Basically I am just asking why lights are not linked to wipers after a small delay.

Makes sense since a number of states require headlight use when using windshield wipers.

We don't have auto sensing rain wipers in the US. Still, my 2000 Chrysler 300M had it where if the wipers were turned on the low beam headlights came on after a short delay. Since, as mentioned, so many states here have laws where headlights must be on when wipers are used it makes sense to just have them come on with the wipers.

I guess the answer is the engineers were busy making the rest of the car so nice they left that off for the next model change. ;)

Does the dash display on the gen3 dim when you put the lights on and if so can it be overridden. This is one of the really annoying features in the gen2 UK version that means if it is raining and bright, the speedo is impossible to see with the lights on (required in the UK).

If you rotate your dimmer switch all the way it should 'click' which would keep the dash lights at full brightness at all time, even when the headlights are on.

The UK /Europe version does not have a dimmer switch. The MFD can be set bright but then has to be reset to dim at night, but this does not affect the speedo.

Wow, that just sucks... Is there some law or something over there which would have kept them from including a dimmer switch for dash lights?

No law against dimmer switches, other vehicles have dimmer switches but not the gen2 in any trim level. I have the Tspirit version that is the highest trim level. We also did not get heated door mirrors a joke in our climate. But back to the topic is does the gen 3 in UK still have the same problem(s).

I didn't mean a law against dimmer switches, I meant a law which would have made them not include it with the cardue to some odd safety reson which would have affected said law. It just seems so odd to not include something as simple as that, that's all, no big deal, leaving it alone.

But don't we get a manual headlight level adjuster instead? The US headlights are fixed (other than if you tinker with the actual headlight beam settings), whereas we have the manual hight adjustment. Good if you have loads of weight in the back etc.

In UK/EU HID headlamps are required to be self leveling and must also be fitted with a washing mechanism.

But on the 'normal' headlights we get the manual adjustment dial which I understand is lacking on the US versions with non HID or LED headlights.

We're not smart enough to be adjusting our own headlamps!
In Canada both HID and LED headlamps must have autoleveling.
We never got the HIDs. This year it's LED or halogen. Probably a good thing after reading of all the problems the US car owners had with the HIDs.

As I mentioned it is lacking on halogen models and also led since the led come with auto leveling. No model Prius in the US gets a manual level adjustment. The Rav4 EV has a manual adjustment for its led headlights, go figure.
