    Some other promising anti-malarial paths have been identified recently including genetically modified bacteria that live in the mosquitos and 'mess them up'. Good stuff because mosquitos are very effective vectors for several other diseases as well.

    They are the only group of species that I would not mind if they all just disappeared. If they have a 'useful function' I don't know what it is.

    Another perspective is that species evolve to get away with whatever they can. If nobody else does it better, or busts them for it, bingo.

    Smallpox? The Variola virus is busted and I'm not sad. Cholera (Vibrio cholerae) would be another happy departure.
