I find the oil filter to be the most difficult to remove of any car I have worked on. What kind of oil filter wrench do you find satisfactory?

Big pair of channel locks. Then just hand tighten.

I bought from a Toyota dealer a cup-shaped tool that fits onto the bottom of the filter and has a square hole in the middle for a ratchet. It works great. Don't over tighten the filter when installing. Good luck!

Exactly. This is the best tool for this particular job.

Alternatively, bring an oil filter with you to your local auto parts store and find a cap wrench that has a good fit on the filter. Do not buy a cheap wrench made of plastic.

Autozone has an OEM Oil Filter "F" Cap Wrench for a couple bucks. The tool lists some of the filters it will fit on the inside, including the Fram TG4967 that I use. Makes oil changes a breeze.

The one at Autozone, unfortunately, doesn't fit. I returned it.

    This one fits perfectly.

Amazon.com: Lisle 54930 65 mm Flute End Cap: Automotive

That's my picture with the filter cap on my Prius"v" that I posted.

If the dealer overtightened it, be careful, it can break.

    This one is stronger.

If you want the best, get the OTC made service tool.

    I have all three.

Note that Classic and 2G use the traditional oil filter which has its own metal shell, vs. 3G which has an oil filter that is just a cartridge. Hence the tool required to remove the 3G filter cap may be different than the tool required for the Classic/2G oil filter.

I've own this Lisle filter wrench for nearly 20 years. It still works for removing the stubbornest and tightest metal canister filter.

Toyota OIL FILTER WRENCH Part Number 09228-06500-02

The harder that you turn the wrench counterclockwise; the tighter it grips. I've NEVER not been able to remove a filter using the wrench.

With the Fram "grip" coating, a lot of cap wrenches dont fit the end of the metal canister. You shouldn't be using a wrench to tighten it, anway. Unless, you have carpal tunnel.
