Trying to decide which brand to get if I go with the fin route and wondering what the general consensus is...

I've got the solar roof option...If it overlaps onto the solar panel, then I'll pass, but it seems that there are versions with this in mind....correct?

Whichever one you chose, I would appreciate it if you would state what factors played a role in your decision.

    Thanks in advance! (y)

i went with the beatsonic cause i heard the reception was better, which indeed it was :) I didn't lose any radio reception at all. Its bigger too, looks nicer :) but more expensive than the VG.

Adding the sharkfin definitely gives you the sportier look, trust me, I've been in your shoes before, it's a big investment for an antenna, but it makes your overall car look soo much better :p

VG fin was one of the first mod I made on the Prius, no degradation on the reception whatsoever, XM, AM, FM. Color matched perfectly and looks great. Can't complain for $70!

I'm sure this has been talked about exhaustively but what increase in MPG's can you see by going to a shark fin?

Older pic, none solar roof, but here it is:

As for MPG, probably zero. I didn't buy it to increase MPG, I bought it solely for looks.

Emailed VG directly to get a specific answer and this was their response...
"Our pre-released Mark II VG shark fin antenna is compatible with your 2012 Prius 3 Liftback with Solar Roof and we do have OEM colors, we just need the actual color code from your car's color identification plate: VG Shark Fin Antenna - Paint Code. For more information, how to order and pictures, please see the email below."

Pics don't help and they didn't specify whether or not it overlaps the solar panel. Replied and waiting for a response....

I would like to order if I can get confirmation/clarification before I leave town tomorrow, since it takes a couple weeks to receive.

If anyone could confirm, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok...so I've decided to get the VG shark fin since it doesn't overlap onto the solar panel.

Question for those that purchased thru the priuschat store...is there an additional discount for being a member of the forum as it suggests at the store? If so, how do I get the discount code?

    Thanks in advance.

I purchased black to go with Solar roof but Toyota said to remove old one and install the shark fin they had to get at the rear window headliner. Plus the taped down seal over a roof penetration made me concerned over water leakage over time. I live in wet climate and do frequent car washes, I could see it developing a leak.

I ended up not installing it for that reason.

I don't take the small flexible stalk original off for car washes (my original concern) and its been fine.

Good point...has anyone on these forums who has had a sharkfin installed for a while ran into any issues with water leakage?

I got mine from the Prius Chat Store to support the site but then needed a replacement gasket /adhesive and contacted VG Shark Fin Antenna - Home and they were great customer service, I noticed direct buy from them is $ 69.00.

Im very happy with mine and I noticed no difference in radio

With the VG you dont remove the stock antenna base, the fin just goes over the top so it cant create any water leakage. its a 5 minute install. Unscrew the antenna stalk, position the fin to check fit over the OE base, remove the adhesive and stick it down

OTD when buying direct ends up $81. I'll save a few bucks by supporting from the priuschat store.

Thanks for the additional info. I'll order later today. How long did it take to receive after ordering for you?
