To which I replied: "Dude, there's no such thing as a bad nice person Prius but thanks for the thought".

He said "Well...you've got the black alloy wheels like the bad rigs"

Funny exchange with the gas station attendant tonight, a busy night at the gas station. Only reason I have the black wheels is that is what the car came with. The kid thought I'd spent thousand$ on black wheels at least attempting to give the Prius some edge and he apparently appreciate the effort.

Lol. Yeah, most people assume that there are steel wheels under those plastic wheel covers.

I know I did. Just crazy that Toyota takes nice alloy wheels, paints them black for some crazy reason and then covers them with a cheap plastic hubcap.

Black would not be my choice but with these alloy wheels I must plow.

I take it you're in Oregon since you have to have an attendant pump your fuel? I was blown away by that oddity the first time I passed through on my way to Seattle. You'd have thought I was getting ready to commit a felony when I went to grab the pump handle myself. The attendant totally thought I was crazy, as did I of him. It was a comical exchange now that I look back on it, but I was a little annoyed/perplexed at the time...

OMG I had the same hysterical conversation with the attendant in Portland. Flew into Portland to drive to Wasington to photograph a wedding. Had to top off the rental before dropping it at the airport on the way home. The attendant was as confused at me starting to pump my own gas as I was to have him do it for me.

What a beautiful trip that was - OR & WA are so gorgeous. I had only ever been to CA before this trip.

And from New Jersey, the other state that has gas station attendants from a more civilized time.

I had a similar exchange with an attendant in Grants Pass when we refueled on our way back from the Tour of California earlier this year. Gave me big props for the nice wheels ! Oregon rules for not making us pump our own gas. Every so often the oil lobby tries to get us to vote for self service with the promise that it will save a few cents a gallon. What an absurd notion ! All we have to do is drive to California to see what it costs there to pump your own gas.

Funny I was just at a gas station here in MN and someone came up to me and said "Nice wheels! Really compliments the whole look of the car."

I think it's a sensible idea. Where else would one be allowed to handle such a dangerous liquid without wearing any safety gear or taking any precautions? Perhaps we need the rules changing to reflect the dangers involved in handling petrol?

LOL He serviced you first because with your small tank, he knew you'd be done first after a little squirt of gas.

The small tank is a disadvantage for the attendants. The big tanks give them time. The little, tanks keep them hopping. He was actually half way to another car when he turned around. It was a funny exchange. I don't like the black alloy but spending better part of $1K for new wheels that should be standard is hard to justify. So it was nice to hear some people think the black alloy is spendy and edgy.

I disagree about the black painted wheels. There is an earlier model Prius in my neighborhood that is running the silver wheels without the covers and I don't really care for the look. Personal taste and sensibilities..... I know !

You"ll see most car mfg offering bright alloy wheels as a selling point and as big dollar option. Even Toyota though on one car they do offer expensive black alloy wheels...the Prius.

Most people either totally love black wheels on a car or totally hate them. I went with the happy medium and got black rims with a partially machined face for some shine. Best of both worlds! :D

Black wheels are definitely a minority taste, a very small minority as you can see from companies like TireRack in what they offer and sell in wheels.
