So I was checking the ChargePoint website to locate chargers in my area, and it looks like the local mall is 'charging' $2.40/hour to charge the car @ 220V. Unless you have an empty gas tank (which is a big no-no), why would anyone bother paying this much? Am I missing something?

I know this mall likes to brag about being green, but this rate almost feels like they don't want anyone to use it (unless the Leaf/Volt charge a lot faster somehow?).

Is there an app which indexes all these charging stations (not just the ChargePoint ones, I know they offer an app).

The Prius is pulling down about 1.9-2.2 kWh on an L2. I think the Leaf and Volt and can pull down slightly higher with L2 (not much more).

They are being green, it's all about the $$$$$...

This is just like a saying I made up years ago ... They are stepping over the dime to pick up the nickel, because it looks bigger. They want to recoup their expenditure. But, if they would either give it away or charge a nominal fee, people would shop there more and they will benefit in the end. Very short sighted approach!

At $4.00/gal for gasoline, $0.75/hr is just about the break-even point for the Plug-in (about 1 quart gasoline for 1.25 hour charge). At $2.40/hr, only a driver of a pure EV (like a Leaf) with an empty battery would pay that price. Or one who feels very strongly about cutting gasoline consumption at any price.

As a previous poster said, they may be "green", but the green is the kind with pictures of deceased statesmen on it. With these kinds of "amenities", there is always the tension between making it a profit center, and making it a loss leader to draw in customers. The management at this mall has obviously chosen the former.

It looks like some of the other ChargePoint units in the area (30 miles away from this mall) are also charging $2.40/hour. Reviews indicate that people who won't make it back home without are the ones using the system.

So it seems like they are only drawing in customers who are the exception (need charge to get home), rather than the rule (want to top off). Seems like a great business plan to me! :)

This may be one place that the plug-in owners don't care if a regular vehicle parks there.

yes, in fact the 2013 Leafs being released for sale in just a short time can charge at 2x the old rate (6kW+) just like the new Gen II Rav4-ev's. The Tesla (requiring an adapter) can charge at even higher rates. So for those models - the outrageous rates are more than acceptable.

I work at a Toyota dealer and we were wondering how much it costs to "fill" the battery. I live in Penn Yan and PY Municipal charges 2.97 cents per Kwh. So it costs me 9 cents to charge at home and we have a 240 station in the shop and I pull it in 2 hours before close and fill it there.

Okay so I am really confused now.. Below is the rate section of my bill. There are two billing rates based on the first 250 killowatt hours I use and the cheaper rate is after that. With this information. How do I calculate how much it is costing me to charge the car. Would I be correct in saying it would cost me about $.25 (I multiplied .085 by 3.) a charge for the power and $.21 for the delivery for a total of .46 cents to charge?

    Basic Service : 29 day(s) @ $ .3600 $ 10.44
    242 KWH @ $ .0857 20.74
    475 KWH @ $ .0975
    POWER SUPPLY CHARGES
    717 KWH @ $ .073089

Technically, you would be paying $.0975/kWh, because the car charging is above and beyond all of your other usage. So, it would work out to $.0975 x 3 = $.2925 and $.073 x 3 = $.219 for a total of $.5115. If this gets you about 13 miles, then it works out to about $.039/mile. I have been running at about $.07/mile for my Prius HB as a comparison.

I'm a fellow LIer and take the HOV every morning from x65 to x44. Do you commute on the LIE?

jsfabb. So I am basically paying 51 cents every time I plug in? I am on Long Island but don't take the lie unless I am visiting clients. I have a 3 mile commute. Oh... I also have a solar PV system on the house too.

if you have solar why doesn't it's offset show up on your bill above. Realistically - even if your system generates as little as 10kWh per day, then you can consider your power to the PiP to be offseting your grid tied production - even if you're charging twice a day. I look at my solar generation (30kWh's per gallon) as being worth 50 miles per gallon or 4+ dollars per kWh ... because if I were burning gas that's what it would cost me. Plus I have to earn 5 dollars prior to taxes, in order to net the 4 dollars per gallon. Breaking down the 30 kilowatt hours to a value of $5+ dollars to me represents an equivalent 16¢ per mile. Since our utility company pays us about 3 cents per kilowatt for hour surplus PV generation - that leaves us 13¢ per mile ahead of the game as long as we drive electric .... less than ¼ the cost to drive electric compared to gasoline.
