So day I was doing my normal running around with errands etc. I have been in EV mode and every time I come home I put it back on the charger. So I am using 7-8 miles. Then going home charging for an hour and going out again etc.

Is this okay usage? Does it need to be discharged all the way? Can I charge only for an hour and go again. Just don't want to damage the battery.

    There's nothing wrong with this.

Right off the bat, if you're in California or another CARB state, that battery is warranted 10 years/150,000 miles.

Generally, you want to keep the battery depleted (which is actually about 15% charged; the battery never goes below 15% or above 85% charge). In my daily use, I drive 40 miles to work, which depletes the battery. Then I drive home and plug it in at night using the car timer, which completes the charge at 7:00 am. On weekends, anything goes, but I try to keep it charged.

However, if/when we get charging at work, I'll charge before and after lunch. The battery is there to be used; I'd rather get my money out of it by using it up. Plus, I'd like to brag on PriusChat about getting 75 or 80 mpg instead of "only" 65. I'm in this for the lulz, baby!!!

The business about discharging completely before recharging only applies to old Nickle-Cadmium batteries. It does not apply to the Lithium-Ion in the PiP (or the Nickle-Metal-Hydride in the standard Prius, for that matter). So charge your PiP whenever you want for however much you can.

Just figure out off your next bill what you pay per kWh after factoring in the extra crap fees they charge. Multiply that by 3 since each full charge is ~3 kWh.

benalexe -- I've noticed you are pretty new to the PiP. I upgraded my EVSE to a 240 so that the car charges in 1/2 the time. It's a nice upgrade because I do exactly like you. Come home, recharge, then head back out. Only have to sit down for 30 minutes to an hour max now. The 3 hour wait was difficult.

As for the coming home after 7 miles and recharging… there is nothing wrong with that. As far as I am aware, it's better on a Lith-ion battery charged in that manner than full depletion to max charge. But that said, Toyota does not allow us to do full depletion to full charge. On the leaf you can.

Scan Gauge 2 shows the battery at 85% SoC when full. 24.3% SoC when it kicks over to HV.

The link for the EVSE upgrade is evseupgrade.com
Didn't have my EVSE for a week, so my MPG dropped dramatically while it was away.
