    With some historic prius information

Toyota Prius Sales Figures - GOOD CAR BAD CAR
It looks like march sales of
28,711 is an outlier with launch variability.
If we remove the prius c and plug-in from the family though, we are at 149,490 prius liftbacks and wagons. Prius sales should finally beat the 2007 record of 181,221. 2013 should tell us if we are simply cyclical on hybrids as we peaked 5 years ago, or if the cars will sustain an increase in market share. I hope its the latter.
I don't see a camry hybrid break out yet, but I'm sure one is coming soon. Toyota doesn't seem to provide this information on their site, but provide it to other organizations that report it. The ford c-max was launched with limited availability and had 969 units sold.

A fan of the "Dashboard" report on hybrid sales, I'm always torn between the early but imprecise Toyota newsroom numbers and the detailed, cross-vendor, report from the Dashboard . . . but the early press room numbers always wins.

I'm also hearing a lot of sad news about EV vehicle sales on the regular car podcasts. If accurate . . . <sigh>

Dashboard is the standard, but it is a little slow. Goodcarbadcar.net seems like a great source, but doesn't have all the breakouts.

On EVs, a number of large car companies are putting out very negative statements on pure BEV. The exceptions are Nissan/Renault and Tesla. Ford is fairly positive but slow playing it, waiting for battery technology to get less expensive. These companies will need to prove there is a market before the others come into play. All the majors seem to see a good future for PHEVs, and these sales although much lower than governments and companies would like, they appear to be growing. One sad statistic for hybrids though is Ford sells more ecoboost upgrades than all the hybrids sold in the US.

Looks like the tax credit for the PIP will be available for some time. Now with the current deal from Toyota for them, maybe it's time to buy. Hmmm...

The dashboard is out. September is a little disappointing, but great sales so far for the year. Lexus ES hybrids are probably taking a few of the Camry hybrid sales. With the new fusion hybrid out soon the mid sized sedan hybrid market looks healthy. That segment is expected to rise to 2M cars soon, an if hybrids can rise to a 15% share that's 300K cars.

September 2012 Dashboard | Hybrid Cars

Toyota was forecasting over 200K at the beginning of the year for the prius family. It looks like they will beat it.

Thanks for the heads up on the dashboard:

I won't feel happy about hybrid sales until they reach 5% market share. But that will remain difficult unless someone seriously cracks the pickup and light utility van market.

5% is not far off... just more manufacturers need to bring the hybrids out.
It is not reall that difficult - hybrid is going to become just another engine option for every car out there in next 5 years and for (almost) every Toyota in 2.

Next year we will see new Corolla and new Rav4 hybrids, as well as Lexus IS and smaller one in Lexus GS.

So that will increase the marketshare as well, they just need more manufacturers to get them out.

Right now in Western Europe, hybrid is the best selling Yaris.

10% of cars will get you five points. IMHO this will take a much bigger penetration of phevs. Many don't see the big advantage of hybrids. A honda fit is fairly inexpensive,
What is hybrid market share in Europe now. Isn't it less than 1%?

I dont know, it has to be very low as only Toyota is selling them And Toyota has 4% market share in Europe.

However this year 15% of their cars sold will be hybrids and thats going up, new Yaris was available only from July and there are waiting lists right now.

For new Auris coming out in Feb 2013 they are expecting 33% market share in hybrids, same as for Yaris... i think in western europe, this is over 50% for both, as in eastern hybrids dont sell much (cheaper engines do).

So next year with new Rav4 hybrid, as well as new Auris and Yaris, they should increase their hybrid sales a lot. It still leaves Aygo (cheap 1.0l car), without hybrid, as well as Land Cruisers/Hilux and Avensis and Verso. Avensis and Verso are getting hybrids in 2015 at earliest.

So Toyota alone will sell 150k hybrids in Europe next year most likely... but thats as far as it will go until more manufacturers step up the plate.

    Thanks

Ford will be selling hybrids next year, and gm with their phev, but the market looks very rough for european cars in 2013. Maybe the in 2014 hybrids can start getting some penetration. vw and bmw should be producing hybrids by then.

VW did introduce Golf Hybrid... However I doubt they will push it because they probably lose money on each sold as they buy low volumes from suppliers. Plus Jetta Hybrid was compared to Prius by Autobild, and they found it poor... it got worse mpg by a lot and plus it was jerky.

Is Ford going to sell Mondeo? That could sell well in hybrid form, as long as price is not too crazy. It would definetly be version to get in Europe, as it is efficient and fast for European sedan. Easily be faster and more frugal than their power diesel.

    GM started selling Ampera already.

European buyers want hybrids as can be seen by Yaris Hybrid success. 1.1k out of 1.6k Yaris sold in August in Germany were hybrids, and thats with 6 month waiting lists.

My problem is introduction of new models in the existing, hybrid pool doesn't move the ball down the field. We really need cost-effective hybrids in markets not yet addressed.

sure it does... average buyer is not going out and saying "i want an hybrid"... they say "i want mid size car", then they go out and cross-shop.

More hybrids you have, more sales you get...

And sales are good... up in USA by 68% for the year, and doubled worldwide.

In the future, selecting hybrid will be just like any other powertrain - you want new 300... do you want Hybrid or V6? Choices! This is exactly what people discuss on Fusion or Camry forums, they decided on the car and now are deciding on the engine.
