On a recent trip with my new Prius I tried to use the POI locator feature described on page 83 of the Audio/Navigation Users manual. I soon discovered that the car needed to be stopped to use this feature which is not very practical when traveling on the freeway. In the past my co-pilot would use the POI feature on my Garmin GPS to locate a restaurant along our route while in motion. A rep. at Toyota customer service informed me that I needed to install the latest update to be able to utilize voice recognition while the car is moving to utilize the POI locator. I would then have a microphone icon on my POI screen to access the voice recognition feature. I've received the USB stick and installed it to get the 2.1.0 update, but still don't have the microphone icon on my POI screen. Has anyone used this so called voice recognition feature with the POI locator while the car is moving? If you have I'd be interested in receiving some tips on how this works and which update you have installed on your system. At this point I'm kind of sorry that I didn't just get the Prius II and buy a new Garmin GPS to stick on the window. Unfortunately one doesn't get the chance to fully try out this new technology before making the purchase.

I have a Five- and still use my Garmin for Nav/POI needs.
I've only used the built-in POI function a few times but IIRC- you hit the mic button on the steering wheel- when prompted say "find next" then it unit responds with "say POI or brand" or something close to that- then you say "Walmart, Home Depot, etc.. then it lists the results on the nav screen then it says "say line number or say correction" to choose the POI. It's a very poor system, I much prefer my Garmin over Toyota's 2012 Nav system.

Thanks for the info, I'll try that next trip. I'll also take the Garmin along for back up.

I have the v 3, and it has voice recognition on the nav. system. I am pretty sure the 3's come with this feature standard. You do not require an update. at least mine didn't. I bought mine in late October of 2011, and have had no updates on my system.

There is an icon on the steering wheel showing a face speaking. You must press this icon which then brings up a screen on the display. This screen gives you a number of options. such as " POI, address etc. You can then touch your choice on the screen . It will then ask for the Type of POI ( for instance say "golf course" it will than bring up on the screen a group of numbered golf courses in your immediate area. you can then say which course you want, or you can say the number of the course ie 1,2,3,etc. It will then ask if you want to set the guidance for that course.). This is all while the vehicle is in motion. You may have to repeat the routine till the voice recognition correctly recognizes what you are saying. I have very slight PA. dutch accent and it does not always pick up my correct words. In fact some times I cannot get it to recognize many of my commands.

I also have a garmin nuvi, which I trust more than my v's nav system, and the nuvi is updated free approx. every.couple of months.

Hope this is of some help.

Yes, the Garmin is better. Fortunately it mounts very nicely in the little window at the left of the dashboard.
