How is your dealer about charging up your PiP?

I give most of the folks at my Toyota dealership pretty high marks (well, all except the high pressure "closer"). But I was surprised when I drove my PiP in for regular maintenance. Both when I made the appointment and when I took the car in, I asked if they would plug it in if it was going to sit for a while (or if I wanted to let it charge after the work was done). They seemed startled by the question, and my service rep said the service department didn't have anywhere to plug it in. As it was, they turned the car around quickly - and, of course, it still gets incredible hybrid mileage. But I thought it would be good business to have a 220v charging station for their customers. Disappointed!

i thought all the dealers had to have one. mine did, and they didn't even know why or what it was until i bought the first and only pip from them.

My dealer says they will charge you up if you are getting a service/maintenance. And when I went in for a service, they forgot to charge it!

I brought my PIP in for its 10k service to Pasadena Toyota and the same things happened to me. I asked if they could have it fully charged and I received a blank stare and left with no charge. I was disappointed to hear they didn't even have a fast charger.

They'll probably tack on a charging fee to your service invoice if they do charge it up. ;)

I thought my dealer would have charged the car up for the test drive or at least when I picked it up but they didn't manage to do either one. Getting them to charge it up at a service is probably asking too much.

The dealer at Longo Toyota charged my PIP when I did my 10k miles service. No questions asked. I just needed to sit my car there longer for charging.

  8. Not to charge the car shows the same amount of ignorance as the rest of the non-hybrid population. The amount of people unaware of this revolution is amazing.

I had my PIP at a different Toyota dealer to fix a flat tire TWICE and both times they forgot to charge me up until I called to check the status and remind them to plug it in.
For the 5000 Service, my Dealer didn't start to charge the PIP until after the service was done, about 1/2 before I got there.

I told both that they had plenty of time to plug it in, but they didn't seem to understand.

the 5,000 service is tire rotation, right?

back to topic, yeah, my experience has been that most dealers have no idea. all of the PiPs in the lots have flat batteries. when I mentioned to the local dealer here in Berkeley that they should charge up the car they use for test drives, i got a sarcastic/snarky "we'll look into that" remark along with a "it drives just like a regular Prius anyway" comment.

ugh, how do these people still have their jobs? honestly, i would kill for Toyota to have their own dealerships, corporate-owned, with employees who actually understand what they are selling inside and out. Think Apple store for cars.

yeah, never going to happen, i know.

the odd thing is, toyota, and all mfg's, must know how bad it is at the dealers. the question is, do they try to do anything about it?

Why bother? Consumers blame the dealer, not the manufacturer, for the shitty experience, and the dealers keep selling cars, so Toyota has little incentive to do anything about the situation. Worse, if they decided to operate their own dealerships, they'd probably piss off a lot of people (consider what Microsoft is doing with the Surface).

I am bring in my car for the first 5K service next week.
I was told that it will be about 2 hours, so I made my appointment at 8AM to wait at the dealer.

I don't expect they will charge the car in the 2 hour window, but may be I will be surprised.

Can someone enlighten me a) why they are bothering with this service and b) why a tire rotation takes two hours?

I sure don't want to wait 2 hours for an oil change and tire rotation (30 minutes for the work, then 1.5 hours afterwards for charging). It's not like they fill up the gas tank when you bring in your non-hybrid Toyota when you go in for service, so why would/should they top off the battery?

Oil change is not part of the 5k service unless you drive in extreme conditions. …

Tell the Service agent to charge your PIP while they are working on it.

That's absolutely ridiculous, why would they ever want to do that?

Because my dealer said they would. Dorschal Toyota in Rochester, NY.
Why would you call it absolutely ridiculous, when it's absolutely possible?

I can't imagine why anyone would want to take on that kind of potential liability risk just so you could save 0.2 gallons of gasoline
