Matt Cassel has had bad games deserving of boobirds, but when he goes down with a possible concussion?

very sad, but not surprising considering the debasing of human life these days.

    We're talking about FOOTBALL---right?
Football isn't a 'contact' sport. Basketball is.
Football is a blood sport---otherwise??? It would be FLAG football.

    Personally?
I don't have any problem with it. I'll even watch the occasional game, but really? Are you the least bit surprised???
It's not even close to the first time that this has happened.
    Won't be the last.

If the NFL draft really was a DRAFT....then I might have to move the old giveacrap switch out of the "don't" position however (comma!) for right now?
    It is what it is.

    GOD loves life's little ironies.
In the EU? It's the (other) football FANS that get maimed during the season.

    C'est la vie! :D

I cannot think of an instance in which joyously applauding a man’s agony would be considered respectable behavior.

Watch US football...it's what the game is about...gladiator combat...guys literally beating their brains out for our entertainment...it's what we pay to watch.

I've noticed for a while now that American Sports fans side with the referree call that aids the team they support. I cannot really explain it, other than the suspicion that they feel it is their right to put honesty and fair judgement aside when it comes to sports.

I just wish it was *only* sports. Unfortunately politics and nationalism appear to be played the same way.

So you are OK with crippling brain and other injuries as long as they don't die from them immediately?

Last Sunday there were probably dozens of rapes and murders in the US. Children were almost certainly molested....I'll leave the statistical gymnastics to the bed-wetting liberals, but I'm sure that you see where I'm going with this.
I'm simply not going to expend all that many lumens of brain energy feeling sorry for some rich professional athlete who got his poor little feelings hurt because people cheered when he got his bell rung on TV.

    Sorry!
Maybe when we solve education, drug abuse, and get the world peace thing figured out we can drill down to assuaging the bruised egos of professional athletes. After all....this guy can't be all that bright. He's probably going to do his very best to put the pads back ON.
I think that we should let him.

    Prostitution is a victimless crime.....right? ;)

While you expend your brain energy doing just that....chuckle.

But you missed the facts that it was another player who commented, not Matt Cassel who said nothing about his feelings being hurt.

Eric Winston, the player who made the comment, didn't say his feelings were hurt either. He said it was bad sportsmanship.

So you seem to be creating a Red State diatribe and getting the facts all wrong and then being hypocritical about it, claiming disinterest while commenting again and again about it.

in my experience, when a player goes down and doesn't get up, from either team, the fans get fairly quiet, and if/when the player shows signs of life, the fans give them a hand. this was very unusual but probably a sign of the times.

That's pretty much how all violent sports such as US football, rugby, hockey, etc. I doubt you will find that attitude in the professional curling leagues, but it is a different class of sport for a different type of person.

The spectators cheered when the gladiator got eaten or mauled to death before them. Stuff happens.

    Yup.

A game where if you foul yourself, generally you yourself report it to the referee and the other team. It is a not a "hope I can get away with this", it is a play by the rules and play with honour. It does not make for very exciting television like US Football, but that is why they are a completely different class of sport and different types of people watch them.

    Short answer - no.

We don't know all the consequences of what we are doing to ourselfs, the foods we eat, the things we do and so on.

It's becoming more and more apparent that football is doing real brain damage to the players - but we digress.

The original topic is: "is it OK to rip a person when they are down, in this case with a concussion?" I say no, just like I think it's unacceptable to urinate on the enemy dead > U.S. Marines filmed urinating on Taliban corpses punished by military | Mail Online

I do not think that anyone here accepts the notion that it's OK to applaud an injured player...the only thing that I was suggesting is that it's probably not the first issue that Congress Critters ought to tackle when they get back from their fall recess.
It's also not a war crime.
Heck...it might not even be a misdemeanor in most states!!
    It's just low rent.
    You know...
    Like urinating on the Flag.

    Is it "OK"?
    Nope.
Would I want to live in a country that made flag desecration illegal???
    Nope.
Would I lift a finger to help a bed-wetting liberal who was getting the crap kicked out of him (or her) because he(or she) availed themselves of their right to desecrate a Flag?
    Ah........Nope. ;)

Sorry.....but it's football. PROBABLY not the most important problem we face in the United States right now.....

Is the importance of an issue a prerequisite for posting?

Of course this is not as important as nuclear proliferation, but fans acting like animals is repulsive.

^ Nope...not at all....but agreeing with the post shouldn't be a prerequisite for replying either.
It would be a pretty boring forum if we all chanted "four legs GOOD.....two legs BAD..." ;)

No we don't digress at all. We cheer big hits, big hitters. It makes all the highlight films. It's why we watch the game. We are no different than the Romans and their gladiators.

I would hope we are more civilized than the Romans, but stuff like this makes me wonder. :(

There is hard-hitting, then getting injured - BountyGate was about crossing that line into harm....the NFL is reexamining where that line of of acceptable hits/harm is....everybody reevaluates what acceptable is. For instance, slavery was acceptable, but no longer.
