"Dennis Ellmer, president of Priority Chevrolet, says he owes Sawyer an apology on behalf of the dealership, and had intended to do right by the buyer by letting him have the vehicle at the agreed-upon price. Sawyer's lawyer says it's a little too late for saying, 'sorry.'"

I'd say that it isn't too late to say 'sorry', but merely letting keep it at the contracted price isn't enough. He does need to be compensated for the illegal detention too. False reporting is a crime.

Sounds like they don't have the swiftest of decision makers at that dealership.

How do you "accidentally" sell a vehicle for $5,600 less than they should of? Don't they check before actually printing up the contract?

Then even if you want to believe that somehow all fail safes in the deal process failed, and a contract got signed that was horribly in the buyers favor, how or why do you compound this failure from the dealership POV by having the buyer falsely arrested?

I think this is just universal Karma for once floating back, for all the times buyers have been cheated by dealerships. Arrest aside? I kind of like the story that someone got the dealership to provide a such a GREAT deal that the dealership had the guy arrested.

Unfortunately for The Dealership, the charges should of actually been..."Getting Too Great A Deal on A Chevy". Which isn't illegal....just stupid of the dealership.

My guess is the buyer takes his new SUV elsewhere for any warranty supported maintenance.

One of the things this does to the buyer, is now and forever from that day forward, HE IS IN THE CRIMINAL DATABASE FOR AUTOTHEFT.

If it were me in his shoes... That little tidbit alone would have precluded me from getting a security clearance for the weapons labs I did some consulting work for DOE back in the day... and the fella may never know that the reason he will be denied an opportunity was because the prospective employer called up and got his arrest record.

The folks that called it in to the popo, need to go to prison for this crap.

Why did the Keystone Kops even put him in jail? Seems a little detective work up front was in order. I do agree it's time to haul off the dealer's employees for this false arrest. The record should be expunged then off to court to determine the civil damages. Maybe the dealer should have to post very large signs in the showroom "We Arrest Paying Customers". Dennis Ellmer gets my vote for scummiest dealership person.

    Eh?
    Maybe....maybe not.
    I respectfully disagree.
    I've got a top-drawer clearance...and I've been on both sides of the handcuffs….er….two and a half times… ;)
There's a diff between being arrested (or detained) and being indicted...let alone convicted.
I'll stipulate that the law is your gig, but I'm thinking that being falsely detained for GTA (or whatever they call it in the Commonwealth) isn't a game changer for a security clearance. My current company does a VERY comprehensive background check for new hires...so much so that the investigators who adjudicated my most recent DoD background check (you have a complete re-do every few years in the canoe club thanks to Walker!) commented to me on it.
Anyway....unless there's something to this story that we're not hearing about....the offended party need not sweat the background checks.
    OK...so....
The dealer NEEDS to answer for the mistake.....and unless I miss my guess.....they WILL.
What's the sentencing guideline out in the People's Republic for making a false statement, councilor???
...and what will they deal it down to?
The real punishment will come in Civil court.
What's the wait out there in the PRC for that?
My guess is that if the courts are as bollixed up in the Commonwealth as they are in the PRC, they'll offer some quid, and the offended party will get a glimpse at the timeline, they'll haggle a little, and snap on it....probably on advice of their council.
    Six weeks from now?
    No story.
Hell....when was the last time you heard anything about the Travon Martin trial?

The guy already got five large in upgrades to his wheels,
He's gonna get a little more from the dealership or their insurance company.
    End of story.

By the time they are over with this case, the buyer may be the new owner of this agency. In which case he would be eligible for a discount.

Arrest records, once in our National database, are never expunged... and I am positive, an arrest for GTA would mean they wouldn't get the interview at either of the Labs I got clearance to work at. Although, I admit, that was nearly a score of years ago now...
