Most impressive when streamed to an HDTV, still amazing on a tablet. Beats Sunday morning sports shows (except Formula 1) too. Grab a cup, or pot, of coffee and enjoy:

With a ripped glove they said (back in 1960), the guy didn't even tell mission control as they didn't want them to stop him from the jump. Big ones on that guy.

Whew, great experience watching history made live.

I think a lot of Austrian newborn boys will be named "Felix" now.

When he stepped off that ledge he fell MUCH faster than I, for some reason, thought he would. I'm not saying I thought he'd float down lol but just a bit slower the first bit of fall.

I may have missed it, but did he not break the sound barrier?

Tremendous acceleration, I think he went 0-600+mph in <30 seconds. What a ride!

This is official: Felix reached Mach 1.24 / 833.9 mph - well above the guesstimated 729 mph.

The parachute opened at 5,000 feet - not a lot of braking distance considering the speed...did he use his body to brake towards the end?

An increase in air density slowed him down to around 120 mph or slower.

His velocity had slowed by the time he was a mile up from Terra... dense air does that.

I'm curious what sort of temps he generated by aero drag during descent. His pressure suit looked like a triple-layer nomex race driver's suit.

    Using these assumptions:
    • 300 lbs - everything
    • 32 ft/sec(**2) - G
    • 24 miles - distance
    • 51,263,949 joules / 12,244,184 calories
Although the slip-stream will carry away a lot of heat, there will be surface heating as some is transported into the material.
