First I want to say I am THRILLED with my Prius and how it took the impact. I love everything about this car and people are going to get sick of me saying how great it is. Anyway - here's what happened - I was driving down a 3 lane route. Traffic going the same way. I was in the left lane. Person was in the right lane. Cars (including me) going 50mph. They decided it'd be a fine idea to cross three lanes of traffic, travel perpendicular to the traffic and go into the restaurant. They also had a blind on the driver's side - which I am guessing was blocking sunlight for their kid in the backseat so they couldn't see any oncoming traffic. This can't be legal. Anyway, I had no time to stop at all and I hit them. All my groceries (I was just coming back from the store) flew forward and exploded out of their bags AND packaging. Somehow my windshield wipers were on. Somehow I was still able to drive the car off the road. Everyone walked away and fine. Cop came, did cop stuff, long story short - they got a summons. Anyway I'm thankfully okay. I don't feel any pain or anything but I'm sure it's coming. Airbags did not deploy.

So of course I am worried sick about my car. I love this thing. I've had it for over 6 years. Here are pictures....do you think it's totaled?

And here is the other car with their shade block thing:

I kinda figured it was. I'm really bummed. It's bittersweet. This car has served me well. I've been wanting a new car but refused to get one until something more efficient came out.

My passenger front was not much worse than yours and they totaled mine, your driver's rear bent frame I think.

It was both pretty bad and I expected it to be worse. I am really glad the car took the damage, but sad it had to sacrifice itself for my sake! It was 50mph head on collision. I couldn't open the passenger door at all - I think it's bc the fender is pushed back. The hood is pushed up too and that bumper is a goner. It was also leaking fluid - I'm guessing its the windshield wiper fluid. It was too thick to be oil or anything like that. I was able to drive a little to get out of the way but that fender was digging into the tire. It was towed. No way it could go anywhere. I was hit 3 weeks after I got my Prius - tboned right at the two doors on the driver's side. It was $5000-$6000 damage, I can't remember. But that's about the worth of an 06 Prius and this damage looks just as bad so I imagine it's totaled.

Living down here in So. Texas, I see car after car after car after car looking just like this either being towed or on a trailer headed into Mexico.

I like the horns on the front. Did you grab them before they took it to the yard?

Well I'm guessing my trusted steed is probably going to go to Mexico too.

I didn't, but there's other things I need to get out of the car before it goes to the scrapyard so I'll grab them then. They were put on as a joke for a weekend 4 years ago - and they've never come off since. They don't affect my MPG. (I get asked that a lot)

Maybe leave them on. You might recognize the taxi next time you take a vacation in Cabo or Cozumel.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I seriously doubt yours will be headed that way. Mexican nationals don't need to go that far north; plenty of pickings here.

Getting off topic: We call them Mexican trains. Many are 2-3 cars together in tow often packed to the gills with other used items like appliances, motorcycles, bicycles, etc. I personally think they are easily and "legally" laundering cash money obtained here from drug sales AND then making extra profits back in Mexico. Brilliant. Any cash deal in the USA over $10k has to be reported to the IRS and lots of police dogs trained to smell out cash waiting on the highway corridors headed into Mexico.

Being born in Brownsville, those trains pre-date the drug trade. :)

Sorry to hear about your loss. Am glad to hear everyone walked away without any major injuries!

That said, there are some kick-nice person deals on the Plug-ins right now, to the point it is close to the 2012 Prius 3, might be worth a look.

Yes, I personally profited 30 years ago from motorcycle sales when they opened the border to a certain specific size. Anyway, the train traffic has taken an uptick in the past few years and now they are taking to the side roads trying to avoid the highway as much as possible.

I just totalled a 2008 as well. someone ran a red light and I hit them on the side with the front of my car just like you hit that other car, but a little further forward on the other car. My damage was similar to yours. Mine didnt look as crunched, but the front was bent inward pretty good with some engine parts exposed and bent so I am not sure how the damage compares. I think mine was over $17k so they declared it totalled.

I got the plug-in. Its so sweet!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! Amazingly I am not sore at all from the accident. Even after a night's sleep. I think that's still a testament to the car.

Soooo you all think the Plug-In is the way to go? I always thought it was kind of a joke with just the 13mile radius of the electric. I was just looking at a regular Prius. I want to peek at the the Prius C (that's the little one right?) but it might be a little too small. I ride/train horses and need something to lug my tack around in. There's some 2011 Prii with just 5miles around here (NJ) that look good too.

They look fairly available....I want a car NOW. I can't be carless. I remember when I got my Prius in 2006 there was a waiting list.

If all you do is pure highway driving, then the plug-in might not be the best choice, but if you drive through any villages/cities, take backroads, or drive < 40 miles a day, I think it is definitely worth a look. Remember, even the base model comes with features such as heated seats, rearview camera, etc.

You have some other choices besides the Prius now. If the 13 mile EV range of the PiP isn't enough, go test drive a Volt. If you think it fits, come back here and learn about how to get one for the lowest price, about $30k or $10/day on a lease. You can save some $ on fuel with a Plug. I drove 1400 miles in September and used 1 gallon of gasoline.

The do do a lot of "long distance" driving - probably about 30-50 miles a day. Not necessarily highway, but sometimes it is. I rarely go just down the road - if it's a bikeable or walkable distance, I'll opt to do that. I like Chevy Volt - that would prob work better insofar as distance for plug in and gas. I am a little skeptical of how well that plug-in/gas-electric hybrid works.

I just got off the phone with the insurance. I sent them pics and filed everything, gave them the PO report. They said it's "borderline" on being totaled - from the description I gave them and the pics. I'm not holding my breath.
