Nook Color (or any 7" Tablet) as Nav for 2010 Prius

I have made a few posts about the best way to get an android powered nav unit into a 2010 Prius on a budget. I have a big desire for gadgets and a small budget, so I had to do a bit of playing around. My install is not perfect, but I think some of the edges could be rounded off to make it a little smoother and it is a decent solution for me.

I looked at Ottonavi, fly audio, audiovox, sony, other crap from china. You name it, I considered it.

First off it needs to be said that I have a 2010 Prius II with the stock radio, no nav. Everything in this post is about my prius, but I imagine most of it would transfer to any other.

I already have a Nook Color running Android 2.3 (CM 7 to be exact) and I LOVE google maps for gps, pandora, iheartradio, siriusxm app, npr podcasts, ect. In my old car I had my phone mounted on a suction cup and would run everything off of there. I figured that putting everything on a 7inch screen, in the position of where a regular nav unit goes would be easier to see and safer to use. Including the price I paid for the Nook a year or two ago, this cost me just over $200.

The actual "install" is very simple and effective, but it could be prettier. I got some velcro strips at the dollar store and fixed one side to the nook, and one side around the radio display screen as seen below:

This results in the Nook being positioned as so in the Prius:

One really cool feature with CM7 is that it has "renderFX" which allows you to set different display modes on the screen. Full, regular brightness as shown above, a night mode with very reduced white levels and brightness, and also a "terminal" mode which only displays different hues of green. The terminal mode looks great at night (almost like a fighter jet!), blends in wonderfully with the other green lights on the AC control, and is also very easy on the eyes and not distracting like a normal GPS or phone when driving at night. See below:

As for running audio from and power to the nook, right now I am running a cord from the armrest aux port to the nook and just powering the USB from the cigarette lighter. I will be buying a bluetooth audio receiver when my next paycheck comes and that will sit inside the arm rest and allow audio to come through without the cord. For trips under 4 hours, a fully charged Nook does not need to be powered.

This is a fairly crude after market nav unit, but it will work for any 7" tablet and looks pretty decent, so I thought I would share.

Any thoughts for how I could improve it would be greatly appreciated and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about getting android running on the Nook Color.

i've had my galaxy tab 7 inch with cheap $5 case with velcro to the dash since couple days after i've bought the carin 2011 may.
i've upgrade the aux to bluetooth using belkin air cast.
bt audio streaming is the same as the putting wire using cable from my MOSTER CABLE BEATS STUDIO headphones.
    no ground noise also. now...
i have upgraded my tab to a nexus 7.
using poweramp android app i can use finger swipe to go to next track and the sound is a lil better do to some eq settings.
also it automatically plays the music when i power on the car because it starts playing when it connects to the bluetooth.
i have the screen always on when charging so i dont have to wake the tab everytime i want to use it.
when i turn off the car, then screen shuts off in 10 sec and bluetooth disconnects instantly so the music stops.
OF course i have my galaxy nexus with verizon and unlimited data.
i'm tethering when i'm using the maps and watching youtube videos.
    i love it.:)
when i leave the car i can just take the tab out from the case or just rip off the velcro and take the tab with the case on

belkin air cast ($60) or new potato for android ($100) will both work. i just wanted to try one and local frys had them stocked so i wentwith belkin and i love them. i dont know about new potato. try keeping ur unlimited data and buy ur self a gNEX LTE or gNOTE2 thats coming out next month. nexus is good for it's updates and devs @ xda. too many roms to try. i ditched my OG droid and promised myself i would never touch another MOTO products ever again.

just out of curiosity, why the jump from moto? locked bootloaders? i hate them to death for that, but every motophone i have ever had has solid build quality.

they are solid but heavy also. locked bootloader is a no no... always root and rom. after using the amoled u cant really go back to washed out lcd's. i even hate my ASUS NEXUS 7 720p LCD screen because of the color is washed out. contrast sucks and colors dont pop. not vivid enough. only way i would ever buy a MOTO again is when google makes a NEXUS with them. but probably not gonna happen or i've heard that google is trying to let most of companies to make ASOP phones. people hate samsung and their "plastic", but IMHO plastic is way to go. weight and durability. hell i changed my battery door to a white one for like $8. if u buy flagship samsung phone such as Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Nexus or Note, u wont have problem with DEVs working on the ROM. i was on 4.1.2 jellybean since last week (the same day google posted up the source codes). and if u go ICS and JELLYBEAN u will be amazed how smooth android have become. i've used all versions of iphones (inclusing the 5), all versions of ipads, all versions of galaxies, and some of the adroid tabs. now i am using galaxy nexus and nexus 7. i will probably switch to gNOTE2 as soon as it comes out.

the droid4 actually has a pretty good dev/rom community... the bootloader is locked (FU MOTO!!!) but there is a way around it. my main reason for the droid4 was i cant give up a physical keyboard and the d4 was the first 4g phone with a keyboard... so i jumped on it. i also dont mind the wieght... i actually prefer it! i loved the shape/feel/size of my OG and the D4 is the closest thing you can get to it now.

my fiance has the GS3 and i must admit i am a bit jealous... she did drop it the 2nd day she had it and shattered the screen.. so theres that!

i will look into and probably buy myself a note2... love the concept of it!

i used to love the physical keyboards, but when using a 4.65 inch phone u wont really need 'em anymore. note2 is really promising. i've tried the iphone5 for 2 days and hated it nothing really changed. it actually got worse with the stupid maps and the screen res is ideal now but not for now because it was so new. and the fricken auto correct keyboard and the small nice person keyboard. the screen stretched but keyboard was the same size. i sold it for like 800 to a isheep and im happy. they make me try all the apple products and ican sell it for top $$

my gf dropped my original galaxy tab 7 inch and i ordered the part in the ebay and fixed it last year for like $50
if u drop any phone face down... screen will crack most likely..

    Okay, I have a question...

I have the stock navi unit but it drives me crazy. So I wanted to replace it with Galaxy Tab 2 7". Seems it would bee pretty involved to take it out and do all the rewiring so I think I'll look into just doing something like this. It really doesn't look too bad and I think the benefits outweigh having it not be flush. So...

    1. Will the velcro come off clean - with some effort of course - if you want ot resell the car? I was looking into a phone mount earlier and it had some double sided heavy duty tape that was supposed to come off clean if you wanted to remove it. If I wanted to use that I guess I could find a case the Tab could snap into in the car and leave that case in the car and just pull the Tab out.

    2. That Belkin aircast thing... did you only need that because the car didn't have bluetooth? Mine has it, I can't see a reason I would need it... I can use BT for my phone calls without issue and for streaming audio - well not on the ROM I'm currently on but there's supposed to be a fix for that. Right now I just use an aux cable for playing audio off my phone.

Really want to get this going... I'm so sick of the navi lock, the FM static and the songs changing when trying to browse music while it's playing. Ugh. Really poor design.

Oh and for the record, my HTC Rezound LCD screen is gorgeous! I wouldn't want an s-amoled screen after this beauty. I LOVE this phone. :)
And for a kb, try Swype if you haven't. It's amazing. I could never go back to using my thumbs again. Ever.
