Do the ChargePoint and others EVSE wands have a feature to lock them while being used? I do not recall...
For example, our Toyota EVSE have a hole right on the release button, I always use an small padlock to secure it wihile connected to the car.

No. In fact, the charger itself gives notice when charging is complete, so the next person can startup without you having to be there.

Someone unplugging for a purpose other than charging their own vehicle is just plain wrong. After all, when it is ever appropriate to touch a traditional vehicle that isn't your own and you don't have permission?

John, you need to keep your GoCam keep rolling while charging.

John; sorry to hear you were a victim of "gas rage" you were probably unplugged because the perpetrator assumed you were getting a free charge. In the 5+ years I have been plugging in publicly, I have never been unplugged and I have not heard of anyone being unplugged unless it was by someone who was going to use the plug (even that situation is rare)

but as gas prices go up, expect this kind of knee jerk reaction to escalate into something more. there are so many clueless people in this world.

When a Leaf owner sees a PiP at an EVSE, do they consider it ICE'd and get pissed??

Some do, I would guess most don't.
This type of thing will change as more plug in vehicles are sold, as the ranges increase, and a gas prices increase. I suspect Leaf owners in areas without many available charges will be most 'put out' by PHEVs because the are more likely to need the refill. Additional chargers and additional range will both cut down on overcrowding.
However, there will always be a few jerks out their.

Some ChargePoint chargers do have a place on the plug to lock them as with the plug that comes with the car. I charge at one of these stations at a local mall sometimes. I was unplugged once there and that's all it took for me to start using the lock. There are two charges and only two parking spots in range, so there is no one at that location to deny a charge if your charge completes before you get back to your car.

The ChargePoint station I use has the small hole in the trigger release- so yes, you could put a small lock on it to prevent anyone from unplugging it from your car.

Basically, there's no reason to ever interrupt a charging session, regardless of who. Once a recharge is complete, then someone immediately plugging into their vehicle with that same plug is acceptable. That's why some chargers offer 2 parking spots. Nothing good comes from walking away after having laid the plug down on the ground... which is exactly what happened to me.

We also face the reality of a plug-in spot being used by a traditional vehicle. The term we identify that situation by is saying the spot was ICED, since the vehicle parked there preventing you from using the charger has only an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine). Sometimes people just don't care.

It's tempting to setup my GoPro camera to capture an unplug event on film. But hopefully, what I experienced will be quite rare. Then again, such occurrences would serve as a source for finally overcoming the belief that a cross-automaker alliance really is possible. Volt rhetoric of the past had strong roots in brand loyalty rather than the motive of high-volume sales. Moving beyond that by way of traditional-vehicle supporter backlash could happen. Reasons for bonding often come from unexpected sources.

My guess is this moron thought by doing what he did would either result in the owner having to spend at the mall plugging in again to 'top off' thinking it's a pure EV and you couldn't get home or since he went back to and waited in his car wanted to see you leave and if he has no life as demonstrated, was going to follow you seeing if you got stuck when the battery 'went dead', again thinking it is a pure EV. Either way, the dude has no life, was looking for trouble or a laugh he wasn't going to find there that day with John and in the end I think you did the right thing just getting in and leaving. That probably killed him more than anything else as he may have wanted a confrontation.

Well, it's the only one I've ever used- so I don't know if it's typical of other ChargePoint stations.

That happens every single day where I plug in for a recharge- I made a thread about it here:
    Charging Station Protocol? | PriusChat
Luckily, the jurors and court staff don't really start showing up till 8:55am and I get there at 8:40-8:45am so parking in front of the station hasn't been an issue- yet. FWIW- as soon as I vacate the parking spot in front of the charge station at 10:30 (once my charge is complete) the spot is usually filled by and ICE vehicle within 5min or less and it stays there for the rest of the day. If I ever need to charge in the afternoon- I'm SOL....

Yeah I am so sick of this happening. It really sucks when you look forward to heading home in EV and discovering you cant because some jerk unplugged you.

I have a few of these left but Im going to start working on a new style today.
"Please Dont Unplug My Vehicle" EV Sign for Your Charging Cord Volt Prius Leaf | eBay

Do you guys have any suggestions or can tell me what you would like to see?

I know for sure that I am going to make the new one "S" shaped so it wont require use of zip ties. Hopefully it will stay on even with strong wind gusts.

I am thinking of making seperate versions for different ev's. With the PIP version it can say something to the effect of "If there is a glowing plug icon next to the charging plug, that means the car is still charging. If this light is out that means my car is charged and it is safe to unplug my car. Please do not unplug my car if the icon is illuminated."

Ive heard the Leaf has a glowing light on the dash that glows when it is charged. Does anyone know if that is correct?

Although not on topic, I saw a bumper sticker on a Leaf that said PASS ME, I'M GOING FOR MILEAGE, NOT TIME

On the bright side, this happening on Prius PHV has less impact than other plugins because of the 50 MPG. If this happens to a Leaf, the owner may not get back home.

The proper signae has been stablish already. Will print in a 8x11 page full color. You can put it in a translucent
sheet protector (or you can laminate it) and mark the hours with a large paper clip. It worked for me.

Yes I have seen your sign before. To be honest, in my opinion, its too busy. I was going for something much simpler. Yours has too much to look at. If I was a dope and I was going to unplug your car Id scan the first couple points and then unplug you anyway.
I believe you need to effect their decision as quickly as possible. A brief, basic sign is best.

Back to the indicators, can anyone tell me if its true that the Leaf has a light on the dash that is lit when it is charged?
How about the Volt. What indicators does that car have?

Volt dash light is sold green when charging. Slow green flash means active but not charging -- could be pending a TOD charge schedule or done charging (there might be a slight speed difference between the two.).
Cellow is transitional or, if it says yellow, something is wrong.

Getting a heads up on my phone from both ChargePoint (the charger) & Entune (Toyota's service) about charging being interrupted is nice.

ChargePoint's latest upgrade gives you notification when recharging is almost complete, detecting that rate is slowing. You automatically get the following text: "Your vehicle plugged into ... is drawing very little power and my be fully charged." It also provides a phone number.

If an unplug incident happens to me again, I won't hesitate to call. That way, ChargePoint will have it on record and will report to the owner that preventative measures may need to be taken. Heck, they might even have some handy suggestions available too.

In the event of charger sharing (2 spots, 1 charger), knowing that your recharge is almost complete gives you the opportunity to offer the charger to the other vehicle as soon as it becomes available.

It will be rather interesting as time proceeds. There was a lot of animosity about PHV from Volt enthusiasts in the past. Fortunately, that's faded away as those concerns sighted actually transpired. We are now looking at an upcoming year with plug-in hybrids from Toyota, Ford, and Honda. The diverse variety of choices repositions the approach to plug-in support.
