It's hard to unlatch from the tit when you have been suckling for so long, and when the milk is so good.

Maybe they are all in "milk coma"?

It's not far off that and you're right, why work when the milk is so good. But one has to ask why it is better to not work? Perhaps it's because of the ridiculous rules and regulations that employers now have to comply with making almost not worth employing people. The social security system is biased to those with children as the £60 a week I was able to claim when in need certainly wasn't better than working. Non workers WITH children can claim MORE than the minimum wage (£6.20/$9.95 per hour) and many can claim MORE than the average wage. Why work if you get paid more to do nothing. That's our problem and one we created, but the employment rules are due to the EU's meddling.

It is almost impossible to sack some useless employees due to the massive protections afforded them by the EU. Great if you're a useless loser, but not so great if you're a struggling employer.

^ It is the same way here.

We pay over $1 Trillion per year in welfare payouts, and that number has gone up over 37% over the last for years and is still climbing. Govt spent $1.028 trillion on welfare in FY 2011 | The Daily Caller

Couple that with the fact that the government runs ads encouraging people to "drink the milk". Government runs ads to get more people on food stamps - Jun. 25, 2012

And then while your at it, take into account our Robin Hood tax code, which basically gives the bottom 40% of earners a tax free raise every year. The Robin Hood Tax System: Taking From The Rich To Give To The Poor - Forbes

And we wonder why illegal immigration is a problem, and why all of our manufacturing jobs went to china. Why would you want to work in a factory and make $25k per year when you can stay at home, play Xbox and talk on your free cell phone and make $25k?

I've been thinking about this and it occurs to me there should be joint award:
    1. Clinton/Blair
In particular, I'm thinking about Kosovo, the Yugoslavia dissolution and subsequent mass killings. Even now, one of the architects is on trial for war crimes. But the most important aspect is that area no longer has organized killing and rape squads.

Can I nominate my youngest brother?

He was the Special Operations Forces air planner for Operation Silver Wake: 900 non-combatants evacuated, 0 US Marine casualties, 0 Albanian casualties.

Ahh the ac-130. My favorite variant was the ac-130u with the 25mm gau-12 "equalizer". Something about firing near 1in diameter shells with a muzzle energy of 73,000+ lb ft at 1800 rounds per minute brought a smile to ones day.

If one of these flew overhead and started to bank left you pretty much new you were screwed.

Here's another one that shows the gau-12 better. More of a sea based role here, but awesome nonetheless.

With his new Mac, my brother designed a new console that he WISHed he had to work on in the AC-130H and MC-130E, his buddies liked his work and had him design how their workstations SHOULD look. One fundamental issue was that one workstation faced aft, so his right and left were opposite every other crew member. When it came time to design the AC-130U, he was sent to Edwards (and on to Area 51?) to talk ergonomics with the aircraft engineers. The Air Force then sent him to Washington to explain to Congress how 'his' version of the AC-130 would be better than the AC-130H, he did so well he was assigned at the Pentagon 2000 to 2003 to lobby for the Air Force. He was out of his office on September 11. 2001.

You wrote this and then later in the thread you complained about subsidizing infrastructural expenditure in the poorer EU nations. Make up your bloody mind!

Greece's problem is worse than other countries because they essentially went through a period of austerity into order to scrape into the eurozone, had massive olympic debt and went into recession in 2005 and just kept borrowing. I can understand the Greek people being pissed off with their politicians, but it's pretty ridiculous to complain that Germany is being harsh when they've forgiven a large chunk of debt and are the major contributor to any bailout package. Greece could always opt for bankruptcy.

For others, the EU had its origins in an economic treaty of the Benelux nations. Britain joined in the 70s under the Edward "danz la roo" Heath government. Heath was a Europhile . As grumpy noted, the idea was presented as economic (It was the European Economic Community), although some time in the 80s when Heath, on the political Question Time show* suggested that people were aware of goal of greater political union at the time the entire audience laughed incredulously.

The fundamental problem with the EU is that member countries are so scared of giving up sovereignty that the parliament has limited powers so the EU isn't democratic. As FL points out the real power's in the commission, which is appointed by the council of ministers from the EU nations. The real indicator of the screwed up nature of the EU is the fact the parliament moves between Strasbourg and Brussels at great expense and all document get translated into all the EU languages.

Britain has ended up contributing a lot in part because of the calculation of contribution using VAT but mainly because of the
Common Agricultural Policy, with the UK not receiving much due to having a small ,efficient agricultural sector that didn't receive much support. A result of the imbalance was that the UK negotiated a deduction in contributions in the early 80s, but as the EU kept expanding, especially infrastructural funding, the wealthier nations ended up contributing more.

    * A touring TV show where a politician from each major party, plus another politician, plus a celeb or other special interest figure will answer (or try to avoid answering) audience questions. Because it tours the country the political make-up of the audience varies. It's quite an effective format and something really missing from US politics.

Oh it ain't no walk in the park here either. Things are hard here, very hard. I'm now employed but earning less than I did 15 years ago, but at least some money is coming in. I think a lot of those marching against austerity here were members of a certain civil service union, though with borrowings still running at £billions a month more than income, they'll be losing a few more members soon.

I think things are slowly improving here, car sales up 8% whereas most of Europe are down. People do seem a little happier and things picking up; the girlfriend is starting to get overtime again from her small employer. I know some economists disagree but if countries handled themselves like I handle my household budget (not spending more than I can afford), then we wouldn't all be in this mess. You'd be amazed at some of the economic plans France has for the future!

It now appears that the EU continues to be officially corrupt, in that their accounts have not been signed off for the 18th year in a row!

Audit 'seriously undermines credibility' of EU spending - Telegraph

Anybody fancy running their business like that? And this EU is the same EU that won the Noble Peace Prize? Criminal!

And this is the same EU that want us to increase their budget by 10% in a time of austerity.

"There is a new generation who will be voting later this month who have never known an EU with clean accounts."

Obviously there is no downside to ignoring accountability, only benefits (and continually increasing corruption) when the makers of the rules can ignore the rules. It also makes it extremely clear why a bigger budget is requested.
