I guess in the end some owns may have been justified in their complaints on fuel economy claims. Hopefully other auto makers will be less likely to boost their mpg claims for fear of getting caught.

It's always about "the money" and GREED.

They are worried about being sued, which again, it's "about the money."

I'd love to know how accurate their fuel meters are.

I've been wondering if the EPA will be able to repeat the C-MAX claims too.

Hyundai has had a taint of corruption about them for a long time. So even though they are fast becoming a powerhouse in auto manufacturing I refused to invest in the company over an anxiety that the other foot would drop. I don't really expect this to be the last we hear of cover-ups and corruption.

    Rather like Mitsubishi in fact.

It will be fascinating to see whether Hyundai's response of issuing debit cards for the difference in fuel costs will pacify the negative publicity.

Will be interesting to see what comes next; if lawyers, class-action lawsuits or some customers will demand that Hyundai buys back their cars.

    6 mpg is huge!

The stock market is often a pretty good early gauge

Check out my comparison tests Prius verses Elantra last year I believe. It was a piece of cake to get 32 city and mid to upper 40's in a 2011 Elantra GLS from Hertz. People can't drive 'em like they stole them and expect good mpg's.

They should be chasing down the EPA with their money hungry lawyers instead of the manufacturers. If the EPA used real world road tests then it could be a heck of a lot more accurate.

Hint: take a look at the spread of poll results for the upcoming US presidential elections.

2nd hint: There is not such thing as a 'correct' fuel economy. All you can hope for is a standardized test and the baggage and limitations that test carries with it.

I'm tired of hearing people clamor for 'truth,' when all we can hope for is quantifiable uncertainty.

EPA test are done in laboratory conditions and are designed to be reproduced 10 out of 10 times.

Now all of the manufacturers are trying to play the game so they get the most they can out of EPA. Some go too far - Hyundai and Ford for instance IMHO. Hyundai got caught.

My Prius G2 got me 70 mpg on road trips yet it was rated 20+ mpg less. Does it mean that it should have scored 70 MPG? Nope.

My Prius is rated ~ 50 mpg yet it gives me what my signature says (~46mpg). I could care less, it's a cool car and it gets what it gets :)

I have a 2012 Kia Soul which was EPA rated at 27/35(city/hwy). I easily get 29 mpg in city driving and get at least 37 mpg on the hwy(I even got 44 mpg once on a 400 mile trip). I have been very satisfied with the efficiency.

Now the EPA site shows the ratings as 25/30, which seems absurdly low, given what I have seen it do.

That's similar to what I found testing the Elantra over a 2000 plus mile road trip across the country. It totally blew away the EPA ratings. It was close to Prius mpg's

My wife and I have a 2012 Elantra GLS in addition to the Prius. Best MPG we've achieved is 35MPG. We average 33MPG though. The 40MPG claim seems almost unobtainable unless I'm driving the interstate through Kansas.

Glad to get some free money for gas though.
