Up the hill, at the light on my street, the cops have it blocked so the gas lines can go across. My neighbors and I have to drive around all the side streets so we can get to the main street.

I can't imagine what people are enduring, 4 hour waits for gas, cold homes with temperatures dropping to low 30's at night, cold showers, cold food, no cash in ATM's. everything centers on getting electric restored. Gas supplies may be 3 weeks before back to normal. Huge deductibles and rebuilding.

Gas supplies should be flowing in a couple of days:

'Gradual increase in gas supply' promised

Also, Hess has put up this website:

    http://hessexpress.com/FuelInformation

I am going to wait it out, since I still have over 300 miles left on this tank.

Yeah, it sounds terrible over there. I was hearing on the news that most folks in NY and NJ don't have flood insurance. Here's a story: Survey: Most homeowners still without flood insurance - CBS News on that.

On the national news, people who live in parts of Manhattan still w/o power describe it as being pretty scary once it gets dark. Then there was the terrible traffic and very long wait for buses due to the very limited operating public transportation.

Just looked at the Hess station info- they have 70 stations on LI- 7 have gas! Long Island has a population of 7.5 million according to the 2010 census data. Could you imagine the lines at those 7 stations today?
It was cold here last night too- went down to the high 30's, tonight it's supposed to go down to 35. I'm grateful that I still have electric, heat, cable, etc... with no home damage...

It sounds dreadful. I remember the fuel shortage here 10 years ago and after about 5 days it was getting very dicey at the petrol stations - fights breaking out and worse - and we don't have guns! We also had electricity and other services running so at least we had warm houses.

What are your Government doing to help the people affected by the storm? Is the army there helping ship supplies of petrol and diesel over? It could get ugly very quickly once the super markets start running low on food. No fuel, no electricity, no heating and no food is not a good combination. Who's helping? Are the charities like the Red Cross there helping with food etc?

Hope you get it sorted soon.

I wonder how many of those cars waiting in line for hours keep their car running the whole time?

There were comments even here, about how all this storm stuff was just hype. People who prepare for a disaster which is averted are ridiculed. Not so funny now, is it?

    ok, i call you stupid.

you are probably in violation of local codes since its highly unlikely that you are allowed to store that much gas at your home and there is a reason for that.

Sandy's path was predicted accurately more than a week before it hit the US. technology allows us to do that. so really have to question your wanting to store gasoline "just in case" when you are more than likely to have plenty of warning of any possible issues you might face.

storing it for a few days greatly lessens the window of disaster should something happen with the gasoline you have stored. so have to assume you have taken great steps to store this gasoline responsibly. i see you are in a coastal state so dont know how much of a risk you might have been in or how well the infrastructure in your area copes with extreme weather events

another thing; how long does 40 gallons last you?

The job of any president is not to do the work but to make sure the right people are in place to do the job. After Katrina, it would not have mattered if Bush took up residence on Bourbon St. His FEMA appointees had no idea what needed to be done to delver relief.
At this point, Obama has demonstrated that his administration is effective. My biggest fear is that Romney and company see no/reduced role for the federal government. If you have no respect for the institution why would you want to serve.
This is an important election and both Obama and Romney have a responsibility to go out and deliver their message. Why should we expect less.

I saw on the news (on the cruise ship) how bad it was going to be so I can't imagine people making light of it. But there probably were...as there's always someone. If the news told me to be prepared I'd rather be ridiculed than be in danger. Call me a wuss I guess.

"Probably" in violation? Perhaps before you badmouth someone it would be wise to get facts. How is the gas stored? How far from the house? How far from the neighbors? What does the particular county's regs say?

I used to race cars and would pickup high octane gasoline from a place in Spokane that was in the middle of a residential neighborhood....but passed the regs because it was far enough away from the houses. And this place had thousands of gallons in steel drums on their property.

And if more people had stored it you wouldn't see the lines at the gas stations with the inherent problems of people cutting and fighting.

Personally I believe people should take more responsibility for their own lives and not rely on government handouts and welfare....you know, that ugliness called socialism. Some believe government is their savior and benefactor and knows what's best for us. I don't.

We are allowed to store up to 50 gallons. All of my gas is in UN and DOT approved 5 gallon lined red NATO military jerry cans. It is in a shed at least 50 feet from my house. The pastic ones have permeation issues, even the newer multi-layer and nylon-hdpe compounded ones. The same compounds are used in your Prius car gas tank, so over time your car "outgases." So, my stash is safer than even the underground tank at your gas station.

Why should't fuel stations be required to have back up natural gas generators to be able to pump fuel?

Natural gas pumping stations are powered, in most cases, electrically. Propane would be a better option.

I have an OSHA approved Type 1 flamable liquids safety cabinet in my garage. How often does any individual homeowner have one of these? The 2009 EPA regulations were enacted, because too many homeowners stored gasoline in their garages in vented gas cans left open to the air.

Why wouldn't a gasoline pumping station use a gasoline fueled generator? It is never going to run out of gasoline at a time when it might otherwise be pumping.

    Still no power for me.
Gas availability will be improving, and I hope so as well.
Those who are effected by hurricane stay safe.

Those who can donate, as New Yorker I greatly appreciate your help.
Let's not talk politics, but rather something positive.
