According to Fuelly, things don't look too good from the start... low 40... still early days though.

    Thanks,
    • Hybrid Take-Rate: 3.06%
A full month of California gas shortages and price spike has a measurable effect. We're also seeing the lead by the standard Prius has eroded but apparently being filled by new models. But also noteworthy:
    • Diesel Take-Rate: 0.99%
It will be interesting to see the ratio of California diesel/gas ratios.

So this is how the market looks to me:
    • Prius Liftback - units are down with some loss due to new model, C-MAX, but also look at the bottom, a large number of European hybrids are starting to show up, expanding the base.
    • Ford C-MAX - new model with good EPA numbers, it will take another month before we see where it fits.
    • Nissan Leaf - who lit their sales fire? . . . Oh yea, California gas prices.
    • Volt vs Prius Plug-In - the relative change suggests that once the Prius Plug-In goes national the Volt ranking may change.
    • Chevy Malibu Hybrid - what happens to weak hybrids . . . where is the 'Prius Killer' Honda Insight . . . where the Chevy Malibu is headed.

Well Prius v and Prius liftback have same internal space too :).
So C-Max imho compares a lot more to Prius liftback than Prius v... if you dont need the trunk of Prius v then Prius is a lot better choice...

p.s. most important part of the dashboard:
October 2012 Dashboard | Hybrid Cars

Sales up 73.7% vs October 2011 and 67.8% for the year. In general, when looking over car sales, you always look at performance last year not last month, as sales are seasonal. For instance if you look at diesel numbers, you would think something is wrong with all of the major players down vs last month but look it over last year and they are up 21.2% YoY. I expect hybrid car sales to go up even more when Fusion Hybrid, Avalon Hybrid hit the streets this month and availability of new hybrids goes up.

I would also expect to see the standard, 1.8L Prius sales to appear to soften as the wider range of hybrids 'eats into the leader.' What I'm more interested in seeing is a broader range of hybrids into other vehicle classes. Perhaps if the standard Prius sales soften, Toyota might consider:
    • light-duty panel truck - something for small businesses
    • light-duty pickup - something for farmers and good 'ole boys

The numbers look fairly good this month with hybrids, phevs, and bevs setting up at 3.71% of the car market. The big growth seems to have come from the c-max and plug-ins.
I would expect the prius liftback sales to continue to decline unless toyota gives more factory to dealer incentives as some tax incentives run out in Japan. Many that want a gen III have already bought one, so lower prices or interest rates are the likely lever if Toyota wants to increase US sales to make up for declining Japanese ones.

The leaf's sales rebound did have to do with low lease rates and better dealer incentives.

I've got to disagree with you on the prius phv though. Toyota says they won't be in all states for another year. By that time the volt may have a 1.5 redesign. The plug in market should grow with the c-max and fusion energi.

The prius c made the insight dead in the water, not that it was doing well before.

I don't get over to MNL much anymore but the last time I was there checking out the battery issue I noticed a few owners were trading in their leafs and leasing new ones so as to avoid any warranty issues down the road. Enough to bump sales? IDK

This is a take that is very close to mine on the leaf

Nissan Leaf US Sales Rise 60% in October - autoevolution

But Nissan has acknowledged they have trouble getting dealers to sell the leaf, instead of just taking orders from people coming to the dealership ready to buy one.

I don't think anyone will be able to compete with Nissan on cost once the Tennessee plant is operating. It will be interesting to see how the battery issues and 2013 my improvements work out. The ford focus ev's liquid cooled pack may help it sell in hot places, but these might just sell phevs. The leaf price will keep the focus ev and imev from getting many sales.

The complaints seem to be about put out new technologies before they are ready. This really deserves to be in a different thread.

Sync - Requires a learning curve, and some users expectedly just expected it to work out of the box. You don't expect to be able to use an ipad when driving in the same way as when sitting down. Ford should have also kept most buttons to do single functions. IIRC the new ford hybrids and energis have button options and better software in sync than the explorer, which garnered the most complaints.

Power Shift transmissions - These have complaints on every implementation as they are an automatically shifted manual. I like the feel on bmws, but its nothing like the slow but smooth shifting of an old slushbox 4 speed. Software may be hurting here also as reviewers found they went to a more efficient gear to early then had to hunt back as more power was demanded. The ford hybrids and phevs have psd instead of power shift transmissions so this shouldn't be a problem.

Collision avoidance and Lane departure warnings - These just don't seem quite ready and have some bugs. I don't know if Toyota, Lexus, and Mercedes have all the bugs worked out either. The prius 5 trim and these new fords are the only inexpensive cars with these options, so more may be buying them, then disapointed.
