No gas/gas stations closed in NY... trouble brewing..

Sometimes a Hummer H2 is appropriate. Maybe they had been running supplies or recovering people from flooded areas, or towing a genset to a neighborhood.

 

This is what happened.

I had an H2 and I don't remember it ever getting 9 mpg's. I wish.

 

Any updates on the gas situation up there? Just read a brand new story about the governor saying it may be a few more days but is it at least headed in the right direction?

 

From CBS: Ala. utilities: Our crews not turned away from N.J. - CBS News

George Kitchens, GM and CEO of Joe Wheeler EMC - a union shop - told CBS News that the initial report that Joe Wheeler linemen had been turned away was "completely off-base."

Kitchens said eight linemen from Joe Wheeler were among 145 Alabama linemen who traveled to Maryland and Virginia in response to calls for help with repair efforts.

"They rode out the storm, and then did repair work there," Kitchens said. "Our people are on the way back home, [but] it's not from being turned away."

Huntsville Utilities also said their workers were not turned away and are working in storm-ravaged areas.​

Utilities from other right-to-work states have also reported their crews working in New York and New Jersey, including repair crews with Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas assisting in New York State. Florida Power & Light sent more than 860 employees and contractors to assist seven utility companies from Virginia to New Jersey.

Electricity in its plain form was a problem here - no power, no water, no heat for seven days today if we made it to 2PM... luckily I was awakened to the obnoxious blue light flashing of my alarm clock signifying I had power at 2:30AM and I left my light on for the rest of the morning and enjoyed a REAL shower, not the "Little House on the Prairie" style shower (boil pots of water on gas stove, mix with cold water, douse, soap, repeat until clean). Was hauling water to horses in my truck yesterday... friends helped with another 55 gallons of water (as "hay burners" also consume big amounts of water when their engines are running properly).

Gas lines were not a problem as the Prius went to the well last weekend... have not taken the diesel there as we are still at 1/2 a tank and after the infrequent trips and drain on the wallet with the Prius I am not anxious to experience the wallet drain filling the diesel but she is a necessary part of farm chores...

Just keep that nasty nor-easter out to sea....

 

Police are at highest alert to prevent anything happen. They are doing a good job.

 

Are there people bringing in truck loads of gas in gas containers and selling them? I'd be interested in doing that (would sell it at cost).

I don't think the problem is demand or supply or electricity or gas, it's..... Jesus, people, you just had a massive disaster, stop complaining that you can't drive your SUV 75 MPH on the Long Island Expressway a week later.

New York was built by people who never heard of electricity or gasoline, you can manage a few days of this. Would it really destroy civilization to spend a few more days at home with the kids?

Honestly, I'm astonished: The complaints aren't about food, shelter, water, sanitation... but about fueling the cars? Wow.

No power still, gas lines aren't diminishing.
Best to think water is half full.

Gas lines means we are getting gas still, just need to be patient.

Look, if you were in charge of recovery, wouldn't you prioritize:
Rescue
Food
Shelter
Water
Sanitation
Restoration of electricity
Restoration of roads and bridges

...all ahead of gasoline deliveries? Of course gasoline matters, but I'd think there would be far bigger fish to fry here.

 

Definitely see what you are saying and for the most part it is true, however, gasoline/diesel takes a part in every single one of those items.

I guess what I'm saying is people have a much harder time taking care of themselves if they don't have gasoline, not to mention the limited government services that could be a result of inadequate fuel.

Water. I just wanted water at my house. Can do without somethings in life but no water, no life. I am one of the lucky ones, even if it took me seven days to get back on the grid. No heat? Wear a few extra sweaters and pile a few extra quilts on the bed. No shower? Try a frontier shower - heat up what little water you have, mix with cold water, douse, soap, rinse, repeat. Forget the hair dryer-a towel will do just fine when I see some folks don't have the luxury of a frontier shower.

No electricity? A little generator powers a light and the fridge so I had food so I was very, very lucky. I drive a Prius so no complaints about fueling up prior to the storm and needing fuel, enough said there. One line below a full tank apres fuel up and apres Sandy.

I have never begged for water in my life but have six hayburners that need water to survive... and they can down a gallon of water faster than my diesel can suck a gallon of fuel.... thank God for friends who had water and not only filled the tanks I brought to them but delivered another 55 gallons of water yesterday to make sure the hayburners were hydrated when I came close to running out and digging a new well by hand was not an option. I am not wealthy because I have hayburners... hayburners vs vacations or high on the hog living> just a choice I made in enjoying life, the same a small boat owner enjoys the ocean or a biker can choose the open road at his or her choosing.

It is sadly, all in perspective.

 

One of the things learned from Katrina was the need for gasoline to support all the volunteers and crews that arrived. When we sent a group, we also sent a refueling truck to go with them.

 

What got me were drivers, once they got gas, were flying out of the stations.

 

One car per family of four, one tank a week each, 24 hours a day, not too bad and that's just the 70 Hess stations. Hybrid sales are hitting records. Silver linings.
