No gas/gas stations closed in NY... trouble brewing..

Yes, for the time been. I'm using the converted 2008 as an electrical generator; 900 watts pure sinewave is not much but sufficient for our basic necessities.
I'm still awaiting for the PV system to get install any day now.

Another storm is in route to Long Island with up to 50 MPH winds and up to 2" of rain on Tuesday/Wednesday this week. Hopefully this one will pass quickly and without problems.

Yes, people idle away the little gas they have while waiting in line.

In places like Hoboken & Staten Island clean water/sanitation is a problem. The flood water isn't just from the river or the bay. That water mixed with sewerage. The next problem for the infrastructure will be cracked or sunken roads and broken pipes as the running water causes erosion.

I've got a friend who is sheltering in place in East Windsor without electricity & heat. She said most stores are now open. I told her she can buy everything she wants by driving south far enough. Although I offered to put her up she insisted on staying home. Maybe the utilities will be restored "tomorrow".

The early settlers of Manhattan & vicinity were on an island that was further above sea level and didn't have to navigate many flights of stairs to go home. The ELECTRIC elevator enabled the current population density of our cities.

I select the electrical routing through my breaker panel and I converted almost all light bulbs to LED assemblies.
900 watts will never start my large and energy efficient refrigerator but will keep running a compact dormer size electronic heat pump fridge. I use propane for the stove and on demand water heater. Watched a lot of DVD movies on the computer.
These are my basic necessities among the big problem.
Have NO phone on land lines, TV service eider Internet thanks to my full Verizon FIOS service. Cell and data service is OK, that's what I'm using now.
Still, have some watts to spare thanks to the Prius.

 

oh i totally agree. i was mocking the comments in the other thread about how 1500 is completely insufficient and not worth the hassle of getting an inverter. that was all

How did you survive last night with the temperatures dropping into the twenties? Got up early to go vote and saw that the outside temperature in the the Prius was 27*. I just hope people are able to survive especially with the lack of gas.

I don't know how the Prius would have survived compared to other cars in the tragic NY, NJ storm areas. I have doubts and would prefer the safety of my Tundra in these conditions which could happen in Fla. where I live. However if you can not get fuel, what matters? I think the feds from the head down stinks and have done poor job in this sad situation. I feel good about being able to donate money to the Red Cross and Salvation Army which I will do more than once. I hope many others will do the same. I'm sure you will, because these very strong people need the help!

 

i'm with you on the charities, but i think fema is doing a pretty good job and learned a lot from katrina. i don't think it's political, just experience.

 

There are some great articles out there that outline why/how the gas situation came to be. There were lots of factors.

I understand what you are saying about your Tundra. There is something satisfying and reassuring knowing you have 4wd and the ability to tow/haul stuff in emergency situations. Like you said though, if you run out of gas quick and don't have access to more it kinda defeats the purpose. It would be a tossup for me and very situational as to which vehicle I would want in emergency situations between my Colorado and Prius.

 

I have been taking a co-worker to work, because he can't find any gas. He has a Corolla with less than 1/2 tank ... but if you can't find gas, you can't find gas. I still have at least 500 miles to go on this tank. Hopefully things will free up by then.

 

FAIR ENOUGH. I would like to know how well the Prius cars in the after storm, water in the streets conditions fared?

 

There's a big hole in the floor, where the traction battery cooling fan is. Therefore, all Prii flood easy.
