asked 7 dealers for their "best bid" on a new IV with sunroof-very specific color combo request (there were only a few in So CA like it that I could find) Ended up getting 9.4% off sticker and paid tax/lic./$80 doc fee. I think that was pretty good (I hope!). My specific color combo request made it a little tougher as some would have to get it from other dealers, etc.. The place I received the best bid from actually had it in stock and I was very happy with them - in and out and upfront.

Hopefully you still negotiated some more after they gave you their "best bid."

My father-in-law just totaled his SUV so I'm doing some Prius shopping for him on his 80 mile roundtrip commute. Using USAA buying service I got the following quotes

Prius II (mats only) - $23,023
Prius III (mats only) - $24,284

It seems to me that Prius III is a better deal but if I can get a Prius II for $21,488 like some folks are getting, that's a difference of nearly $3,000 which makes it a no brainer and go for the II and only feature he really wants is a backup camera and I installed one on a 2011 so that's no biggie. Hopefully, I can get some dealers around So Cal to bite on an offer this weekend. I'll be checking the LA Times as well. Thanks for the help!

Yep....since there was a huge difference in responses I received back, I let the top 3 keep coming back to me and then it really paid off to be very patient and allow them to pursue me. After I felt we were where it should be-I then made a counteroffer to the best one, which they accepted. Patience is key. Timing really worked out because within three days afterwards-all the few specific cars that I wanted (within 200 miles), were gone.

Cody, did you email them all 7 separately or was it a combination of phone calls and etc? If emails, if you don't mind, can you send the addresses of the 7 you sent it to? Thanks!

Never heard anyone try a group buy for a vehicle. I would be surprised it if helps you in any way, not to mention the problem of logistics.

I emailed separately and stopped in at three. Also had phone calls afterwards. I didn't share others prices-just knew what my target was. Clinton at Toy.S.D on Mission George and Hiwa at Toy.El Cajon were the best, and really great to work with (I have bought from both in the past couple years, and will be due to replace one car in the next year so anticipate will be back with these two). A couple of O.C. dealers came in high. Hope that helps!

Thanks! I'll give the SD guys a try. Bought a Prius earlier in the year from Carlsbad. I'm slowly getting my emails out. I think I know my target price.

Just bought a new Prius Pkg 4 in Triangle/Triad area of NC - close to base Silver with Misty Gray interior - options included Carpet mats with trunk; Clear Paint protection and door cups, door edge guards & rear bumper protector, and legal tint window for AL/Fl/GA/NC/SC. Also had pinstripes on it. MSRP was 29,075 (Southeast has a 840 destination fee); MSRP $30,072 including dealer add ons. Out the door for $27,200 which included price of vehicle $25809 +doc fee $499 (all the local dealers had a doc fee -ugh); NC Sales Tax $774.27; Title/NC Inspection/Efiling $117.60 out the door $27,200. They wouldn't offer me the 0% Toyota promotional financing (said it would be $28200 out door with Toyota financing so must have been a dealer incentive in there somewhere). But with local credit union 1.74% for 60 months I think I can pay it off sooner to offset the $1k difference. All 3 local dealers (Durham,Burlington, Raleigh) were close to same price after a week of haggling - but availability of 'close to base' pkg 4's was becoming fewer so we bought yesterday. Some further out dealers offered base pkg 4's for out the door $27,000 but they didn't include the tinting, carpet mats or tinting which was worth the extra $200.00 plus convenience of dealing locally.

Hi all! Just bought my Prius last night. 2012 Prius Three with the solar roof package, $24,290 + tax and tag. Bought in Greenville, SC but had to register in NC, which has a higher tax rate. Worked out to a little over $25k all told.

This is some helpful information for the folks in this forum.
Information is money and I want to share this with you so to save you the hard earned dollars you worked very hard for.

Brought my car from Milpitas, CA yesterday.
    Prius Two 2012 - MSRP: $25,240, I paid total: $22,218 ;$21,998+$220 (Blizzard Pearl)
Talk ONLY with Internet Sales Director, no haggling. If you talk to others, you will be wasting your time because they can't make decision without talking with the top echelon.

    Here some insights:
The best price is now $22,388 at Milpitas with mats and $22,488 in San Jose. You can still get a deal at Oakland area at $22,060. I did not want to drive to Oakland for a couple hundred dollars.

Go to the specific Dealer's web site and look for the "New Car Specials" link. Not all car dealers have it. Only those dealerships that move a lot of inventory will have that. Deals only with the high volume dealers, normally they are in a vibrant city that the economy moves and employment in the high tech industry hums. If you deal with the Central Valley like Merced, you be dealing with low volume sales with out any good deal and variety of cars selection.

    1. Do your research, know exactly which car you want and the cost of the options.
    2. Use your email and deal only with the "Internet Sales Director".
(Again that info is available in each dealer web site)
    3. After you got the deal that you can live with, then get ready to spend couple hours picking up the car.
    4. Check out the car, make sure it only has 1-2 miles on the speedometer.
    5. Also, in the financial office, don't let them take you on a ride on the money train.
Options like alarm, maintenance contracts, etc. For folks who does not know car, you can get the maintenance contract. Tell them it is too much, they wanted $4k up front for the 8 years maintenance contract; I was negotiating with them and said to them, it is too high. They lowered it to $1,895 on mine. I did not get mine because I can maintain my own car. Just a reminder, the price they listed, it is too high. Use your ability to talk them down on the price. Never pay the price they want. Negotiate it down if you really want them.

    Good luck on your purchase.
