The Prius is pretty low, especially compared to SUV's. Our south shore got flooded pretty bad- 6ft+ above the highest regular high tide- when the hurricane hit, it was a moon tide too. I saw on the news this morning that ppl on the south shore said they moved their vehicles to higher ground- but in many cases it wasn't high enough and they still got flooded anyway.
The worst part is- on LI when we get flooded- it's all salt water! It completely ruins anything electrical. A salt water damaged Prius would be a complete write-off at that point.

THANKS. When all is done we should be able to see how the Prius fared. I hope Toyota will look at the results and make improvements.

The tsunami in Japan gave them all they need for the time being regarding salt water flooding and the Prius.

A Prius has a good long range which allows a far drive to get gas. Someone posted they lived in Long Island but could not get gasoline because of long lines and limited availability. However a cousin in Inland Conn said it is business as usaul with the gas station in town and invited him up for the weekend. He packed up the Prius with the Wife and drove to the cousin was able to full up the car with no long line or price gouging, got a few warm meals and visited a cousin and caught up on days long gone and forgot his troubles for awhile. He drove back and only knocked one bar off the guage. Now his biggest worry is getting back to work and getting a pay check since his place was closed for a week.

I probably have spent at least 6 hours on gas line so far.
I've met people who were in line for 12 hours or more, and even met a person who lived in coastal Staten Island where his entire house's first floor was flooded (about 11 ft he says, saw the picture and it was terrible)

Yesterday as I was driving Francis Lewis North Bound near Grand Central Pkwy, I saw big tree just slamming onto the road. I'm speechless... I was the first car to the tree.

Today, I saw two people literally about to rip people's head off as they were fighting over gas line. It's Y intersection with 2 lines merging into one, both being gas line.

How are you New Yorker / New Jersey people doing?

hopefully the rationing finally put in place (can't understand why they didn't do this earlier) will alleviate some of the problems…

I personally haven't had to wait on a gas line yet- I'm a boat/Jetski owner so I always have 2 to 3 six gal tanks full out in my (now padlocked) shed. I last filled up on the Thursday (10/25) before the Monday (10/29) hurricane. I put 5 gal from my shed reserve in the tank last Sat (11/3) and now have 2 pips over half as of this morning.
With a small reserve on hand and a PIP- you can wait out the gas line BS.

Is there any common sense type stuff going on where the cops let people wait and then move up a bunch at a time so they don't have to keep the engine going? Are cops still present at these stations?

I haven't been on a line lately, but as far as I know the cops point to the next car in line and tell them where to go. If you created a gap at the front, other cars might tend to try and jump in. Besides, I did notice that people were turning off their engines when waiting.

There were 3 cops in the first few days when the shortage started- but none at our local station that had gas yesterday. Seems ppl have settled in to the routine- the line was long but orderly.
People here are so edgy now after a hurricane, then no electric, then no gas, then a nor-easter, then 4-6" of snow Wed- that you'd have to be crazy to try to cut a gas line now. You could literally be risking your life for a tank of gasoline...

Finally decided to fill up and went to a gas station not on the main roads around here. Except for a pick-up over by the diesel pump, there wasn't anyone there, so I just pulled in and filled up.

How far out from LI do you have to go to find less crowded gas stations? Seems you could head out of town fill up and pick up a few 5 gallon containers while you are at it. With a prius that would keep you going for awhile. That is if you have enough gas to make the trip out of town.

Just got gas in my wife's car this morning (even numbered plate on Long Island). Ended up only waiting 5 minutes in line at a Citgo. I ended up paying $4.19 a gallon. Hess is only charging about $3.79. Gulf is about$4.09.

When this crisis is over, I hope people stay away from stations that are price gouging. They may make a lot of money for a few weeks, but hopefully, if people stay away, they will make a lot less afterwards.

Hess gas stations are under $3.99
BP gas stations seem to not charge anything more then $4.09 ($3.93 for most of them)
Getty on the other hand seems to have high as $4.29.
I was on line yesterday, only 30 minutes. After I fueled-up I saw local Sunoco with no line.
It's improving, let's hope it continues.
