Keep in mind that you can get a full charge in about 1.5 hours at most public charging stations. So catching a movie, grocery shopping, workout at the gym, etc... are charging opportunities even if you can't charge at home or work. Take a look at PlugShare.com to find the charging stations and then see what chores can be done nearby.

I sure am glad that only comes up as a random question, rather than becoming a chronic misconception. Phew!

Watching this video I captured of a random commute last week, you can clearly see the benefit at 70 mph.

That mode is what we've coined EV-BOOST, where there is an obvious benefit from the plug-supplied electricity even though you are traveling faster than the electric-only limit.

It depends on your commute and driving style but I doubt it. The EPA fuel economy for the PiP is 1 mpg lower than a regular Prius. It makes sense since you are a lugging around an extra 150 lbs of empty battery with the PiP if you never plug it in.

Are we in competition? :sneaky: I just filled up today with my first tank that has a full charge at both ends of a 107 mile commute. I was quite disappointed at my 81 mpg performance. I'm not even close to making my 90 mpg goal at this rate.

Both are rated 50 MPG. If you look at the city/highway breakdown, PiP is rated 1 MPG HIGHER on the highway (51/49). A regular Prius is 51/48.

good to know. I did not notice that. I am planning on buying a PIP. Wish me luck. It may take a couple weeks for it to ship to me ... I will keep the forum posted on my progress. (though I must admit that I am sad to see the bmw go. it's a blast to drive, but it just doesn't make sense anymore)

I hope it goes OK! We are expecting best deal out there is in the range of $26.5-$27K after the Toyota credit is added into the 0% financing. So you have to qualify for the financing. The price above does not include state taxes/fees you have to pay, and it also does not include fed/state tax credits ($4000 credits Fed+CA). The new information I heard was mmmodem was suggesting he got reasonably close to this low price in CA, whereas I was thinking there was more like a $3000-$4000 differential CA vs. East Coast.

We have the experience of shipping some older cars. You can pick up some small dings or broken plastic on the lights, which can be hard to see on a used car. New car at least you know what to look for.

I might need to message mmmoden again. I think he/she said they got that price from a dealership in palo alto... Obviously, if I can close the PIP deal here in CA for $27- 27.5k, then that is the same as paying $26k on east coast plus $1k in shipping...

I stand corrected and amazed at how Toyota engineers seemingly broke the laws of physics. I must've seen the EPA numbers and automatically thought the PiP had the lower rating due to increased weight.

PiP has bigger more powerful Lithium battery pack that can regen capture more energy so that probably nullified the extra weight.

A regular Prius is offered with 17" rims so 51/48 is probably for the FIVE model. PiP is only available with 15" rims. That perhaps explains the 1 more MPG on the highway.

Do you think the 1 MPG lower rating for the Prius was because of the 17" wheels on one of the factory packages ?

We're all in competition. My point is that mileage for a round trip (MPGe) will depend on the number of charges during that "Round Trip". Some trips that we call "round trips" include a mid-trip recharge; others don't.

Yes, I think so. I also think the solar sunroof option with 15" rims also took 1 MPG hit. I believe that is the reason why Toyota doesn't offer both in the same package.

You get neither (17" rims or solar sunroof) of those options with PiP.

Dealerships back east are telling me that they will not give me the east coast $4k TFS rebate because I am a CA resident. they said that I need to register the car in MD for 90 days in order to receive that $4k rebate ...

go find another dealer, this is complete BS. i had the same run-around in Oregon, but found a dealer who didn't make up rules as they went along.

^^^yes quite a few have reported some dealers say Toyota discount does not apply to out-of-state but I agree that seems to be malarky (thought I'd go Joe Biden-style)

It might be up to Toyota/TFS to decide whether or not someone out of the region is eligible. After all, they are region specific discounts/incentives.

But we've had quite a large number of Prius Chat members go to other states on East Coast with no problem, including just a little earlier in this thread a California resident went to MD....unless the rule has recently changed after the Nov 5 deadline of the initial deal.

Don't know. It doesn't seem like the all the conditions/terms are up at
    BuyAToyota!

. It's possible that those dealers could be shooting themselves in the foot if TFS/Toyota rejects their claim.

...to my knowledge we do not seem to have too many reports of purchases after Nov 5

PS- also I do not think I ever discussed purchases previously on Prius Chat, we are here more for assistance and networking with fellow Prii owners, and debates of course, but the current PiP situation seems extraordinary as far as needing to help people understand the rules and pricing that may be out there generically.
