I just got a note from Toyota offering the new V.12.1 map upgrade for $169 (or the V.11.1 for $139). Seems like a lot of money. Does anyone know if it's possible to get this upgrade for less?

You live in San Diego. I doubt you got many changes so just stick with the current version.

Personally, I plan never to upgrade as I just use turn by turn on my iPhone instead.

Well- if you buy it, then put it up on usenet... it won't help you... but we'll get it for less (free actually)
Honestly, you're better off buying a Garmin for $125 with lifetime maps and traffic...

Standalones such as Garmin are fast becoming obsolete with turn by turn navigation on phones. We will one day be able to push turn by turn data to the car's built-in display over bluetooth or the like.
