IS THERE AN ALL-ELECTIRC PRIUS?

    Maybe they were testing how many miles the PIP could go ONLY on electric by bringing it's own electric with it (and not use gas)? Engineers will try anything... grin.

    WOW, I didn't know that Toyota has released a NEW RAV4 EVs, but only in California.

    Toyota actually sold about 350 RAV4EVs in 2002 and 2003 and most of these are still on the road. In addition they let some people buy their cars at lease expiration. The have NiMH batteries that gave them a range of 120 miles. There is at lease 1 car with over 200000 miles on it.

    I don't know the circumstances, but I have seen a long term test vehicle that had regular plates and was registered to Toyota (insured by Toyota too). It was a project car for a magazine, actually. Normally, long term test cars are crushers, at least the ones I've seen (they are crushed and disposed of after a year or so). They can never be registered so they use manufacturer plates. But this car that I'm speaking of (and I imagine it wasn't a special circumstance), was registered to Toyota.

    My friend who works at Hyundai has his own manufacturer plate that he moves from car to car when he needs to drive them. He's some kind of test engineer or something, so you may be right.

    Looking at the bigger picture, Toyota has spent years and buckets of money crafting the Prius brand. The Prius essentially defines what a hybrid car is so I can not imagine that Toyota would ever release a Prius that was not a hybrid.

    Perhaps it would have been snooping, but it would have been nice to have a picture into the hatch area of the car to see if a bigger battery was sitting there in the open or if the cargo area looked different suggesting a bigger battery capable of full electric range.

    This is a Pruis plug-in forum but someone asked about my Rav4 EV. My RAV4 EV 2012 is just a month old and Toyota calls it the 2nd generation RAV4 EV. Under ideal conditions, driven on the freeway at 55 mph and if the traffic is not stop and go and you have a very light accelerator foot, you can get well over 130 miles on a single charge. I did a 100 mile trip the other day with 30 miles left on the range meter. I found there are many more charging stations around than those listed on the car’s navigation map, that’s more than the number of gas stations locally, so range is not a problem for me. The acceleration is just unbelievable even when you are not in sport mode. Toyota made the ride a little stiff to support the 840 pound battery. It comes with a Tesla battery, controls and drive motor with the only options of silver, blue or white. Charging at home is quite magical, just plug it into the 40 amp charger and after midnight it turns on the charger and fills up the car, also the electric company charges only 10 cents a kwh at that time. Toyota is building only 2600 of these vehicles to comply with California’s regulations and after that the Canadians won’t be making any more. I was put through a special signing ceremony at the dealership to drill it into me that this car has no gas engine, the batteries have a finite life and if taken it out of California I can‘t get the car serviced. This car is not for everyone, it’s pricey and has a limited range on a single charge, but is the most fun car I’ve ever had and I’m not burning gas doing it.

    Thanks for the post. Tesla charger? So it doesnt have a j1772, just an adapter for that? I ask because the city of santa monica has a fleet of gen 1's and there are inductive paddle chargers around the city which I was hoping would be upgraded to J1772 when SM upgraded their fleet. But maybe they will just install the 80 amp chargers at those locations. Darn.

    If you are asking about the new RAV4EV, its $50K, and only availble in 4 specific markets (cities) in California.
    They are only going to make 2,600 of them in the next 36 months as well, so its very limited production. If you take the car out of California and it breaks, you have to transport it back to get it fixed, they are NOT training dealers in other states on how to work on/fix them.

    Also, must be tough for the truck driver to stay close to you in city traffic.

    i don't want to get too side-tracked here, but just fyi, this car isn't a secret, it's posted on Toyota's site: Toyota 2012 RAV4 EV
    i do think it's pretty hilarious that you can't service it outside of CA. what's there to service? punctured tires? just take it to any tire shop, no need for the dealer. lol.

    huh? it's got a standard J1772 charger that's 240V/40A from Leviton. No Tesla (or any other kind of) rapid charger.
