Plug-In Prius: real winter driving

okay, that's what i've heard. could you feel anything? i never could in my 04 or 08.

there it is! in rd's post above! you aren't crazy!

 

this doesn't explain the reports of ice starting in ev with temps in the 40's. except for the last sentance which basically says 'don't ever question the ice starting'.

 

mine has done it twice, first time was 45f.....most recent time was 30 or so, but had charged it a day prior. I think if its above 14f as long as you finish charge before you drive the 30f part will be fine.

as for the 14f, that remains to be seen once we get our first very cold day. Im sure at that point I will want ICE running ..lol

If you have it parked in a garage that is 40+ and time the charging so it is finishing up right before you leave I'm guessing you can fool the car into not thinking it is 14 or under even if the outside temp is around 10. Better wear your coat though.

Don't forget that at 124 miles, if you have been in electric the whole time, with no engine starts, the engine will start, and run for warm up cycle.

 

That would be a wonderful thing! They should have little fireworks that come up on the screen when that happens.

 

No fire works! I do have times in the summer when I go for a number of day's using just electricity and cry when it starts.

 

I was just reading the manual and it warned not to do anything to block the grille if you want the Radar Cruse Control and Collision Avoidance system to work properly. Even changing paint on the grille will interfere. Just a heads up on grille blocking for those with the Advanced model. Pg. 342.

 

the thing is, most people reporting this can never seem to take an all ev trip. so that wouldn't be the cause of it. i take a 13 mile all ev trip every weekday. ice never starts. some cannot seem to be able to do this. in another thread, there is mention that if your battery is warm from charging, the ice probably won't come on. but if you charge and let enough time go by to let them get cold, it might come on.

 

28 degrees here, went out to set my Xgauge to battery amps, car in ready mode, ICE off. turned car off, came back upstairs to warm up

 

I should have posted a warning on 100 percent grill blocking, my car overheated! so I immediately took all the insulation out of the top grills and one strip of the bottom grill. Altho 100% may work in severely cold climates, that is below 32F, California is just too mild overall.

 

You had all of the top blocked in California? Who on Earth told you to do that?
