So i recently (about a month ago) bought my first Prius (2012 Toyota Prius package3-winter gray) and have been buying misc. mods/accessories for it ever since. I asked my dealer today how much a remote start system would cost and they quoted me $700.00?!?!? Something just doesn't sit right with me on that considering i think i could get a Viper smartstart for less. Does anyone else see this $700.00 quote as completely crazy?!? I'm thinking about arguing it with them but looking for some fuel to add to my fire first.
Of course this is the same dealer that quoted me $1,000.00 for a clear bra film...

Mods so far (pictures to come as soon as i get around to taking some) all done by yours truly:
    -seat covers
    -black chrome license plate covers
    -Toyota emblem air valve caps
-Toyota emblem license plate screw caps
-Colgan carbon fiber bra... i had to because i commute over 100 miles a day... yes this means i have well over 3k miles on my Prius already :'-(
-3M 1080 carbon fiber roof wrap and side mirror wrap
-misc. interior carbon fiber wrapped items
    -Plasti-dip exterior emblems
-complete interior light replacement with blue LED
    -illuminated door sills
    -Mudguards
    -chrome lower body door moldings
-this, pointless but i had to have it, non slip foam pad kit
    -Aluminum stainless steal pedal pads
    -chrome door handles
-NY Giants chrome emblem (yeah that's right)
    -shark fin antenna
    -rear bumper protector
-3rd brake overlay, because it's awesome and i 100% recomend it
    -window tints
    -window rain guards
-Prius cup holder tray (didn't pay that much for it though)
-i made myself a center console cover out of leather
...i think that is it so far

Mods to come in the future...
    -rims/tires
-possibly a ground effects kit as long as it does not interfere with my chrome lower body door moldings
    -replacement grill kit
-new tail lights or tint the factory ones
-auto dimming rear view mirror... the install on this thing is CrAzY
-thinking about plasti dipping the factory hub caps.. or wrapping
-and well... yeah... a remote start system!!!!

thanks but i am more interested in dealer pricing of install. I found quite a few threads about function/self-install/cost of item by itself, but no specific thread about dealer install cost. I know it's going to be different depending on location but if i knew most people pay around $500, for example, then i could use that to talk them down. or maybe the $700 is the norm, i don't know. Thought this would be a good place to get that number.

I got mine through the dealer when I bought the car, they gave it to me for $350 at the time of purchase of the car.

However, I suggest going with an aftermarket.
I originally told the dealer I wanted the factory one because I wanted just one remote. When I picked up the car, there was the original remote and a small remote start remote. I was obviously angry, as I told him exactly why I wanted it done there and he blatantly lied to me. I can get a top of the line Viper through my work for $150.

A couple of other issues I've had with the factory one that I wouldn't have with an aftermarket:

-When your car is remote started and you open the door, the engine shuts off.
-The range on the factory remotes are less than 1/4 the range of the Viper systems.
-Only one-way starting (the remote doesn't inform you if the start is successful)
-The factory remote design is simplistic with no screen or lights.

Obviously, if I had known all of this at the time, I wold have gone with the Viper.

If you are gonna pay $700 for a remote start, go aftermarket. The OEM is not worth $700 they would be charging you to install. You for the most part have to be standing on the car to remote start it. It's pretty pointless.

It's useful if you will always be 50 feet away from the car 10 minutes before you need to get into it.

How is the Drone mobile coverage area? Have you ever been in a place where you couldn't communicate back to your car? How has the service been, any hick-ups even in the slightest?
