Does anyone have knowledge of 2012's with the same problem? The noise from my Prius 3, model 2 (13,800 miles) was exactly like this video. Matter of fact, I put it on zip drive and took it with me to dealer today. They didn't want to watch it. They say no error codes, couldn't duplicate the problem and for me to start parking outside (winter is coming to Southern Indiana) and see if it happens again. They know about t-sb-0010-12 but it doesn't cover 2012's...yet. It looks like I'm the guinea pig. Any help, experience or suggestions? Thanks.

What bothers me some is that they didn't want to watch the vid's off Youtube....almost as if they know what the problem is and are just waiting for enough people to have the problem for changes to take place. We purchased ours in early April and there was no winter to speak of last year/early 2012 so we're just now having colder weather. Maybe I'll see it happening more. We'll see.

    Hi Steve,
To eliminate the chance of having the rattle issue, when you power up your car, let it run thru the warm up cycle which is a minute or maybe two if it is very cold. It will shut itself off after the warm up cycle and will be fine.

It happened when the car was first started...it went through the "electric" cycle and went bonkers when the gas engine started. It's 24° this morning and the car has been out all night. I'll see what it does when I start it today.

First started on the dealers lot or? Does anyone other than you drive the car? Just wondering what the previous Power On sequence was. That will help nail down a resolve to the issue. All else fails we can address the vehicle build date, assembly plant, and what intake manifold it has. Hopefully it can be resolved with no dealer intervention :)

What was the humidity like that day? Was the car washed around that time?

I would check to see if your dealership has a Customer Service Representative. If so, explain what happened and tell them about the TSB and show them your video. My CSR got the job done for me where as the service tech blew me off.

My wife started the car in our heated garage and I was standing next to it. She doesn't start it any differently than I do. I've tried to duplicate the problem since Wednesday, 11/28, but haven't had any luck yet. Now we have a warm spell so I'll have to wait until the weather is similar again next week.

Interestingly enough the day after I brought my 2010 in for this issue a salesman at our Toyota dealer, who owns a 2012 reported the same issue! Bring in the paperwork straight from Toyota and show the dealer that an error code is not required in order for it to be repaired. Make sure they document the up issue (especially if they refuse to fix it!) remind them that a Prius will look like a piece of shit in the mall parking lot when it sounds like a Diesel engine rattling and rolling!!

Update on mine Prius.....they did finally change the manifold intake. My observations are that the engine has a very smooth transition between electric and gas motor at start up (even after a cold start); something I noticed after the transition is that the pulsation I could feel prior to the repair went from feeling like rocks under the pedal to small pebbles under the pedal....think of it this way....it's like the difference between flying in a small airplane hitting rough weather and a jumbo sheet tapping the rough weather....you can barely notice it.

So bottom like: yes it has happened. Maybe ask your dealer to contact my dealership who has been most cooperative?

Can't thank you enough for posting this video....it was the heart to getting my issue resolved without try to play catch as you can with duplicating the issue at the dealership or my videotaping daily to catch my own car doing it!

Would you be so kind, please, as to provide me the name and contact information of the salesman at your dealership? I'm 400 miles +/- from my 15,000 service and the weather in Indiana is not cooperating with me. I would like to get my service guy to talk to your salesman if possible. The closest thing I have gotten since my initial problem was some rumbling/shaking, sort of like what the old engines would do with a bad plug wire. It lasted about 5 seconds and then smoothed out. I appreciate your input.

Does the engine enrich the mixture on starting? If so could the fuel heavy mixture be hanging around and pre igniting on the next start up? The car probably has a program it follows to lean out the mixture but what if it's interrupted by shutting of the engine before it is completed. Maybe?

The Dealership is Kent Brown Toyota. 607-796-9600
The Service Director Manager is Jim Kellogg who is over Ken Hart who I worked with primarily. Jim Kellogg is a fellow Prius owner and a real pleasure to talk with and exchange our car stories. Also, 1945Steve I see you drive a 2012. Kent Brown Toyota has a salesman who owns a 2012 who had them same problem at the time I brought mine in. They were waiting for my feedback before making the change on the 2012 because it wasn't reported "in the official paperwork." My report basically was that it is working great; hums like a charm........before the repair it ran rough. Now it's smooth as silk and mileage has improved.

Anyhow, I hope you make headway in at least getting your service man willing to talk to Jim. Keep me posted.

Thank you so very much. I'll talk to them before I give any info to my dealer. That way no surprises. Have a great day.

I have a 2011 Prius with 16,000 miles and have just recently had the same issues. Called the dealer in Las Vegas and service writer had not heard of such an issue. Temps in the low 20s and this is the first time the car has been kept outside. I agree with the theory of short starts causing an over fueling issue. I have an appointment with dealer, but I think I will hang on and do a little more research.

Your car has an alternator ??? that is new.... OP there is no alternator the 12V battery is charged by the HV via a DC/DC converter .... (if traction battery is too low THEN ICE charges that ...)

I had this funny feeling when I read the repair estimate from an idiot adjuster after Sandy. Not only they listed an alternator on the parts to clean and test !!! and a starter clean and test. But no mention traction battery ?? I thought this is a joke. I still have the report I think hilarious. It is generated by some software.... I called in and then they actually agreed to a total loss rather then try to clean and fix .
