I thought I'd seen it mentioned somewhere here, but after spending 30 minutes searching around I couldn't find it anywhere...

What's the recommended front/rear tire pressure for the X-Ice2? I bought a set a couple of months ago and plan to have them installed this weekend.

    Thanks,
    Kyle

I would suggest trying 40psi and see how that feels. The higher pressure will help make the tire feel more stable and reduce tire deformation which creates heat. Winter tires are not designed to work well with hot temperatures! Do not go too high as this could reduce braking efficiency.

Happy to report first rotation on my Defenders after 5004 miles, that the MPG difference is +0.2 over the original stock tires with previous life time of 49.9MPG. Considering all the variables of travel from traffic, schedule, road conditions, temp, weather, baro, ect.., my read is that unless one was to get outright anal with the analysis process, that's still a 50MPG tire for me. The biggest difference noticed is the quieter ride and greatly improved handling as compared to the stock Yokos. With the 90K lifetime to still be determined, no significant wear has been noted thus far. I feel more than delighted at this time with my decision to purchase these tires.

Knowing this crowd as I do, feel free to use this opinion or not, agree or disagree, or what-ever you want to your hearts content. This however is my honest assessment of the Defenders. (y) (y)

We have Michelin X-Ice2 installed on our 2012 Prius v and are overall are very satisfied with the tire. After an initial break-in period (~200 or so miles) the tires are now very quiet and comfortable. When compared to the stock Toyos I haven't noticed any difference in ride comfort/quality. Additionally, we are averaging the same mpgs with the Michelins as we did with the Toyos. I have the Michelins inflated to 40psi each.

F8L and other friends in PRIUSchat,

Just got my Prius last month from a gas guzzling ml350 and could not be any more happier with this car!

just from reading the post and a lot of dated post, I know that every once in a while you slap on your 17's (Bling).

I have 17" wheels coming in the mail, Just wondering what tires you have on your 17's and if you were to buy new tires which would you buy today and recommend. leaning towards the ep422's 215/45/17. I know 17" lowers MPG and i'm ok with that for now, but want to at least get a great LRR to somewhat minimize the impact of the bigger wheel.

    Thanks in advance!

I am not an expert on tires but since i was searching for tires as well some time ago, my suggestion would be getting a Michelin Primacy MXM4 in your size.... That should be the best tire for 17" size in my opinion.

Hi F8L, is there a difference other than just looks and accurate speedometer differences between 205/50/17 and 215/45/17. I really like the way the 205/50/17 looks, but would be so happy if they do better with rolling and MPG than the 215/45's... so what I'm trying to get out please tell me the 205/50's would be better for me, Thanks! :D

Thanks lefteye, I really appreciate it.. yeah those tires where on my list as well, but in the earlier posts I read a lot of people saying that they dropped an avg of 4-6mpg with them compared to theyre OEM... I'm hoping to just drop 6mpg when i put the new 17's wheels on

    Thanks

I believe the 205/50/17 is more fuel efficient if everything is kept equal BUT since the speedometer is more accurate people will be driving faster which is worse for fuel economy. If you can make yourself drive 2mph slower, like you would on the 215/45/17 then you will see better numbers. It's a mind trick. :)

The odometer is a bit slower with the 205/50/17 so when you perform hand calculations you will have to add maybe 1.7%- 1.9% to your total mileage for the tank. That is about what I am seeing so far. I think Austingreen, who also runs this size tire, was observing a similar number.

If you were not monitoring anything you would be more fuel efficient with the 205/50/17 but unless you perform the calculations it will appear like you are getting less than the 215/45/17. Does that make sense?

The OEM 17" tire is crazy fuel efficient. I don't know of any tire that can match it. Unfortunately it is expensive and a piece of crap so you'll have to settle with a superior tire and a little less fuel economy. ;)

Makes total sense and I'm the type of guy that'll just look at the computer and not do the calcs... Ignorance is bliss

But just wondering and haven't seen it in the posts I read, How do you like your Bridgestone Ecopia EP422's? Would you get them again?

    Thanks

    :)

For my needs yes, I would buy them again. Because they are an XL tire they are not as comfy as I would like unless I keep the pressure at <40psi in the winter. In the summer I will probably be able to add pressure since the road and the tires are more pliable in hot temps. If you can handle lower mpg the Serenity Plus rated really well with TireRack. It is cheaper too. The extra tread life may help with the difference in FE.

Try and get the $70 Bridgestone rebate and/or the $100 rebate offered by Discount Tire when it comes around. It's quite a good deal!

Hi thanks for the advise just got the new wheels setup, but just wondering if this particular set up 205/50/17 is accepted by Toyota, and if there is any way that they might use this as an excuse to void my warranty

    Thanks

I think they would have a hard time making their case since the 205/50/17 is closer in size to the OE size 195/65/15 than the 215/45/17 is. The diameters are 25.1", 25" and 24.7" respectively. What could they possibly void? :)

lol, that mind trick doesn't work for me, but the sounds of the prius have made me drive slower than my last car when not on cruise control;)

I did look again at this on my last tank, and I have a little over 30K miles on the tires. The head unit that reads gps indicated 1.8% more miles than my trip odometer. I'm sure this varies with brand and mileage. My speedometer reads correct at most normal speeds, but read 85 mph when gps indicated 86 mph.

I would rather have an accurate speedometer and better looks. I agree that the 215/45s will juice your mpg if you don't adjust for them. Theoretically the 205 versus the 215 should slightly reduce rolling resistance and reduce the contact patch. The choice of tire will have more of an affect though. Rim choice will also change coefficient of drag.

I agree on all accounts. :) FWIW I checked my odometer against GPS with the OE 195/65/15 tires I am running right now and the distances over 120 miles were less than 1/10th. So it seems the odometer with OE 15" tires is accurate. We need someone to check the 215/45/17s.
