From Honda Accord PHEV: 115 MPGe for $39,780
The car is rated for 13 all-EV miles on the EPA test and has a trunk that looks like this: 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid: First Drive Photo Gallery - Autoblog
Honestly, I can't imagine who this car is for, except for Honda lovers and/or Prius haters. The cargo area is a joke, the price is insanely high, and the fuel economy in HV mode is not anything to write home about either (though it's better than the Volt).
Can someone explain why this car exists?

Well - Honda's do tend to do better than EPA on highway. So overall this is probably a better choice (from that standpoint) than a fusion energi

I suspect that this car will get real world similar to a Prius (close enough not to matter). And it will be faster and more fun to drive ... Right?

There are getting to be a few options for a "real car" with basically the equivalent mileage to a Prius. That is why this car exists.

Although the cargo area just took it off my list.

    This is far more interesting:

there's a link to a photo of the trunk in my original post! lol

the only honda hybrid that i've known to beat EPA estimates was the original insight. every other one, afaik, couldn't live up to the EPA numbers, especially the old-style ones.

i have some serious doubts that in real-world driving the Plug-in Accord will beat the Plug-in Prius.

Like the Fusion Energi and likely the new Camry plug-in, for people who want a good looking car with great mileage and lots of features. The 11EV is a disappointment but likely the same for Fusion and Camry. Not sure why people wail over "cargo space" as though the hybrids are pick-up trucks. Place for grocery bags is all anyone needs for 90%

I have had plenty of situations where the cargo space in the Prius has been necessary. At least once a month my cargo area is full. If all you're ever hauling is grocery bags, a much smaller car than any of those listed would be just fine for you.

I had a 2006 Civic Hybrid and I was mid-upper 40's without trying. 50+ was doable on the freeway. That is with different than OEM tires. Low fifties in summer wasn't a problem with those but driving in the snow was.

Looks similar in size to the HyCam trunk.

Not every hybrid customer wants a Prius and/or hatchback design. The answer to your question may be answered in the link you provided:

"With the 2013 Accord, the challenge is clear: increase the efficiency level of Honda's incredibly popular mass-market sedan to meet today's regulatory and consumer demand, and don't make it boring. Based on an afternoon cruising the hills and highways of Southern California, it's clear Honda has met this challenge with a lot of newfangled technology hidden away in a largely normal-looking vehicle."

not the new hycam and our 08 is bigger than that, but pictures are decieving and i'm sure a plug in camry would have reduced trunk size. i think you're better off designing from the ground up with plug in.

Curious to know if the Accord Hydrid will improve on these numbers, 49 city/45 highway/47 combined in HV mode.

so if you want to put two bags in your car, you need a pickup? :).

To me if you dont have trunk, you are using the vehicle as PR nothing else. Nobody normal will spend $40k on sedan to get trunk that cant fit two bags inside.

At somewhere over $43,000 with tax and destination, I put this in the same category as the Volt. The average person won't drive enough miles during the typical 7-10 year life of a car to just break even, let alone get any real savings to make up the 10m dollar difference in price between this and a regular 4 cyl. Accord.

I looked at Automobile Mag's PIA press release news in the LA Auto Show. They are saying 47/46/46.

Last I checked those buying a 4 cylinder accord will never save up enough money versus a honda fit, and that accord needs expensive tie downs to carry a kayak that fits inside a fit.

Initial adopters are willing to pay more for a plug-in. Really its not that much more in the grand scheme of things. Its not as if they are buying a tesla S 85KW performance. They may buy it for the technology, they may buy it for using less gas, they may just buy it because it looks wierd.

I don't like the styling or range, but honda seemed to peg the hp and efficiency. I can see buyers in California that want a Japanese plug-in to buy this over the fords or gm. Honda has some strong customer loyalty. The thing looks quite a bit more upscale than the prius phv, so if its got to be japanese, I can see this grabbing some sales. I expect california to get about 30% of plug-ins next year, and it is targeted toward those hov drivers.

If it only had bigger trunk... with trunk at it is, really hard to sell it.

Honestly all these Plugins/EVs with no trunk are just PR getters.

They used to have mine, but after two motorcycles, a lawn mower, and 4 cars over a 40 year period, they lost it with the 2003 Accord. It's a long story, but after putting up with a ridiculous engineering defect that they refused to handle, I felt it was time to say good-by.
