Calling the HyCam seat fold down is really an insult to folddown seats everywhere. It is more like a pass through. Yes one seat folds down but the opening is not nearly as large as the seat.

FWIW - I think we are getting the Prius V for cargo space and hybrid. The second car will have to be the plug in or EV when the time comes.

Then they wouldn't look at the Accord, Camry or Fusion hybrids. Just as if large cargo concerns were an issue they would not look at PHEV hybrids where, by necessity, cargo space is taken up by fuel tanks and battery packs and where mileage is the number one buying factor.

I wouldn't step so hard in that sentence...What "normal" modern sedan are you thinking of?

Is it so hard to understand that some people want a car with decent cargo capacity AND mileage above 45 mpg??

How about a Camry Hybrid. How about an Accord. How about ... any midsize sedan sold in 2012 is quite a bit faster and handles quite a bit better than a Prius. There is plenty of room in the marketplace for a hybrid sedan than gets 40+ combined and has some cargo room.

I bought Prius for the cargo space and utility that only a liftback can provide. PiP retained a flat cargo floor along with the 50 MPG gas mileage.

I am getting about 12 EV miles for around town neighborhood drivings. I have combined 3-4 trips (food, haircut, supermarket, mall, etc) and driven with a single charge.

Accord PHEV with 13 miles can be utilized the same way. 46 MPG gas engine is great for a midsize sedan. It is for those that want to use EV for around town frequent local trips -- not as an EV also for highway long distance driving.

Does the Accord PHV lose the spare?

What??? You just listed midsize cars. I said FULLSIZE (Taurus, Avalon, Maxima, Impala, 300, Charger, Lucerne).

Midsize: Camry, Accord, 6, Fusion, Altima, Malibu, 200, Dart (even though it's marketed as a compact sedan), Verano

Easy to understand but equally understandable that in PHEV one's primary focus is 100 mpg range and the clear acceptance that it necessarily means limited cargo space to provide the batter system to do it.

So the claims here that "cargo space" is a "show stopper" on PHEV's is absurd.

I believe the original term was "family sedan"

As noted above, the difference being "full size" and "midsize" per EPA was 10 cubic feet of cargo room.

or passenger room. the EPA makes no distinctions between where the volume comes from.

If many of those sedans have more nominal power specified, I wouldn't blame Prius for not keeping up on acceleration. It's just its own level of car...as well as cargo room...also in cost...
Agree with marketplace, but not with comparing.

Since when is sacrificing practicality clear?

Balance of priorities is what as been a fundamental appeal of Prius.

I haven't read this whole thread carefully but from Honda Accord Hybrids - Official Site and other places it says it'll will be available in New York and California on 1/15/13. I'm not clear what other states they plan to sell in, if any and when...

Looking at November 2012 Dashboard | Hybrid Cars, I'm guessing its US CYTD sales by November '13 will be less than the PiP, Volt and maybe the Leaf during the same time period.

If their plan is just two states, or even just CARB states, I have no doubt that leaf sales will be higher. In fact, I think the c-max energi will outsell this car as well.
But I'm sure it won't be because of the abysmal cargo capacity or the exorbitant price of this ill-targeted vehicle.

Well, judging by Leaf sales (which is available in more states than the PiP) vs. PiP sales, it seems people in/around that price are gravitating towards PHEVs than pure BEVs. One MyNissanLeafer was irked that last month, the best selling plug-in vehicle was the one w/the least (or about the least) AER, the PiP.

Leafs sales could continue to diminish due to pure BEV enthusiasts having already bought one, a competitor or PHEV instead.

I would get a laugh if this Accord PHEV gets outsold in ratios similar to how Toyota hybrids are decimating Honda hybrids.

Depends on if one views high mpg more practical than cargo space in which case one buys hybrids which necessarily have much less cargo space but much higher mileage.

Or you can have both with PiP.

But not nearly as good looking and much less comfortable vehicle with fewer tech goodies or even safety features like auto/on/off headlights, auto dimming mirrors, erc.
