Looking for some speakers. Have some questions??

I am wanting to get some new speakers for my 2010 Prius II. I am not familiar with how to install so I will have to have someone most likely install it for me. I am looking for a better sound, but mostly for some more bass. I don't listen to a ton of hip hop or techno so I don't necessarily want to slam rolling down the street, but I am a bass player so naturally I enjoy the low end! Being said I am a bass player I haul music gear around regularly so I can't afford to eat up my cargo space in the back with a big box and speakers. Curious if anyone knew of a way to tuck a sub and amp away to the side. I have seen some custom enclosures but none include the amp as well. I have considered like an 8" Bazooka Tube with the amp built in, but this still takes up a little more room than I'd like, but I could probably manage it.

Does anyone have any good suggestions? I also thought about replacing the speakers already in the car. What would this involve? Again I would have to have someone do it? Would it give me much more bass? Would I need to replace the head unit?

    Thanks!

I had a box built with 2 10" speakers and a Phoenix gold Amp with steep crossover at about 70 hz and a remote knob to adjust for the song or my mood.

Back flap up to show leather strap for carrying want to move for seats down with cargo or just take out.

    Very nice!.... And expensive!

I felt my existing system was fine... Just needed some low end... Used an old "good quality" amp, didn't cost much for the whole thing and bass is solid with no rattles etc since it's in its own box.

Yea I like your set up better. Cost wise at least. I am currently thinking about what set up to go with in my car as well. I have an MS-8 that I will install on its own, with a sub, or with new speakers and no sub, or new speakers and sub. But its expensive with amps and install and sound deadening if you want any of that.

Well you can improve, but it's reinventing an already pretty good wheel.
Unless you want the car in the next lane to hear you, I prefer adding what's missing to an already excellent system.
I can hear all the details of the band.

I want it to sound like it's realistic... Like I'm at their concert.... I don't care what the neighbors get.... They only get lows anyway and can't hear the directional Highs and mids.

I agree with this completely! Thats what I'm going for.

Thanks guys. I like the first idea I will def look into that. The box with the handle looks awesome, just hate to eat up that much cargo room. Unfortunately even moving it to the side might eat up more than I can afford. Guitar players just never have their own rides! :) I'm a bass player so I can say that.

Ideally would love to have something hidden or built into the interior, so the first one looks more up my alley.

Built in is most desirable, and that's a majorly sweet system. but major expense.

It's also risky to get the right acoustic "magic" the Toyota engineering has already come up with.

The leather handle allows easy pullout.
But speaker boxes are pretty heavy if they work well.

Get some quick releases for the speaker wires so it's easy and no risk of shorting while your box is out.

I too am a musician but only move my guitar back and forth.

Occasionally if I get something really big at the store the box will come out or I can just put it sideways without even disconnecting the wires.

I put mine in the secret compartment just on top of the spare tire towards the back rear seat. Drilled a few 3/4 inchish size holes in the bottom to allow passive air flow as they do get hot.
I have a toolbox in the front portion of that same compartment "close to rear hatch" and I velcroed it on place so it's not mixing or bumping my amp stuff.

That one has a crossover point of 80hz for lowest, some of those bazookas have no crossover at all, and one had a silly 250hz.....way too high.

I prefer around 70 hz.... Anything higher gets dirty.
These 8 inch speakers will give you the sound you need but not the feel much to your body.

But concussion takes bigger speakers, more room, and lots of muscle and more money. But 8" can sound good if they are tuned well in a factory tube.

The tubes will give you a deeper sound for the speakers size verses a box.

If you do a box, you can port it to give a lower sound at the expense of concussion though.

Unfortunately it takes up too much room to go too big?
I'm hitting my two 10s with only 300 watts but it's true rms clean power.

You can't go toooooo crazy on power because remember you inverter has to power all this 12volt stuff.

I believe it's rated at 1400 watts total.
    I wouldn't recommend taxing it.

So a good quality amp is desirable.

I also wouldn't recommend playing your music or "amp rather" under much load at all without your car being in ready mode so the inverter can do the work.... Otherwise you will quickly deplete the small 12volt battery used to start the prius.... It's really only meant to boot the computer on or run light accessories for short periods.

After looking at these choices based on what I've mentioned above, if I was buying an already made powered box I like this one
MTX RT8PT Road Thunder 120-watt powered 8" subwoofer at Crutchfield.com

Only thing is it may take up too much room, but has a crossover that will go as 50 hz which means it will probably do it.

I like the properties of this better, it gives you a 10inch...You will "feel the music" better... Not sure about the dimensions
Infinity BassLink Powered subwoofer: 200 watts and a 10" sub at Crutchfield.com

*If it fits, this would be excellent. 12" you will feel even better. It takes more power to feel the same impact with 10".

JBL GT-BassPro12 Ported powered subwoofer with 12" sub and 150-watt amp at Crutchfield.com

    The above link or this
Rockford Fosgate Punch P300-10 Single 10" subwoofer enclosure with 300-watt amp at Crutchfield.com

Will most likely give you the best sound.

Remember to set the crossover... Too high its louder but dirty, too low you won't hear much unless music is cranked and a bass dominant song.
70 is the best mix imo.

Ask if they give a remote control for the amp..... Or an an option..... This is very important!

You will have people in the car that won't appreciate the bass like you do. And some songs need more than others.

I would go as far to say, if you can't have an adjustment. Don't do it.

That would bring you back to a box, "factory or custom" and add your own amp with a remote and built in crossover.

The easiest solution will be an all in one powered setup and it should already be tuned properly, but only if you can get remote control knob for the dash imo.

Some good info. From what I have read the one I mentioned above seems to be up the alley of what I'm looking for. Like I said I'm not looking to slam. I just want some more low end. I'm def not going for a full on big money system. Just a little more bass.

I do like the infinity you mentioned, but its to big. I read up on it and thought it might be a good option until I saw the dimensions.

Idea is everything is going to be hidden or tucked away (under seat, in secret compartment in back, etc) thats the plan.

The only negative to the first one you picked is the 80hz low end limitation.
Only the trained ear will miss the cleaner sound of a tad lower hz.

I wouldn't hesitate to try it if being purchased from a local store as its pretty easy to exchange if your not happy.

Nothing like good strong clean lows.

My concern with the 80hz limit is the crossover won't be perfectly steep, or a pure cutoff, if it is, it may work... If not and it's a gradual crossover, you may also cut higher frequencies you want to keep.

I hear ya, is a good point.

I would love to try the Focal mentioned earlier. I found it at Crutchfield for $400. Which is a bit more than I want to pump into it.

I've never regretted waiting till I can get what I want...
I "have" regretted jumping too early.

My wife calls me the "take back king".

That's why I research so long on items I can't take back.

    Wouldn't hurt rereading these posts.
I threw a lot at you.. Hard to absorb the first reading.

Yes and I appreciate all your info.

I think after doing the reading and research I've done it comes down to either the Sound Ordinance or the Focal. Focal is $250 more, and unfortunately I can't find much info online about this unit other than a couple articles that say yes its good. Not much else about it. Which is super frustrating lol.

Looks like the focal is classy and probably good stuff. The extra money going to a good amp and aluminum case and over "you get what you pay for"

Nothing worse than the final sound being poor because one link in the chain was weak.

It has a very good frequency response and good crossover too.

On the right side of the page, you can view the pdf spec sheet here.
