Hahah, funny you should say that. My wife and I were joking the day about me having to work on a weekend. She asked who I was going on a date with in my brand new $30k car. I said yeah, Prius is quite a chick magnet. She said you get quality girls with a Prius.

My Civic was what attracted my wife believe it or not. When I picked her up in it, she was like wow, I drive one of those new fangled hybrid deals. Nope, I just had an 06 Civic that looks like a hybrid with its digital speedometer and wedge like shape. It is just a regular ICE. The hooker was I'll never make up the cost differential between a Civic and a Prius unless gas gets to $8 a gallon. ($10 for a PiP but it didn't exist then.) This point attracted her because I went through the analysis of figuring out the costs instead of believing the hype that hybrids save you money.

Yep but she stayed with you because you lowered the co2 emissions with a Prius.

Fun story is when I was dating my wife many moons ago I was driving a Honda CRX-SI. Perhaps Honda is the luv machine.

Not to beat a dead horse, but you do realize that the price comparison against a civic doesn't really make sense? These aren't compatible cars. Any BMW you get will be more expensive than a Prius and will always get worse mileage. So you'll never ever recoup the price difference. But people still buy these cars, and not out of hype for their fuel economy. I love my PiP as a car even without the great fuel economy. I'd love it even if it got 30 mpg. Seriously.

But yeah, my point is that if you use a comparable car for comparison, the price differential is something like $2k-3k. You can definitely recoup that in a reasonable amount of time. Now, back when my mom bought her Prius and gas was a buck a gallon…that's a different story.

Recouping cost is only icing on the cake for a prius lover.
Recouping cost is a selling point for the rest of the population.
There are many reasons we buy cars.

My friend drove a TR6 and he wore a Tweed Flat Cap and a sarf with the top down in the winter. I thought he was being stylish but it was because the convertible didn't work. He had plenty of dates in the summer and not one when the temperature turned cold in October.

I like my Prius but nothing turns heads like a Boxter or Z4 convertible. However at the 3 year mark sell that German car before it bleeds you dry

But just what is a comparable car? The Prius doesn't have a comparable non hybrid. The comparison is valid when you're in the market for a Civic and you can get a Prius instead. I actually first considered the Accord or the Civic. The Civic won on fuel economy and cost. The Prius lost the next comparison test. Just as most car magazines compared the Prius to a Camry or Matrix because it was closest in size, how is that comparison any better than mine? There are a couple of posts on PC that are comparing their previous BMW's to their current Prius. It makes complete sense, they're saving thousands of dollars in gas, maintenance, and purchase price. But if you're me, a "boring guy" who only cares about going from A to B in the most economical way, a Nissan Versa is the low price choice. I actually went to check one out and seriously considered its $10k price differential over the PiP. But solo HOV lane won.

You might say its apples to oranges and you are correct but it doesn't make the comparison any less valid. If your criteria is cost, the Versa wins. If the criteria is driveability, the BMW wins. If the comparison is off road utility, the SUV wins. If your criteria is lowest cost of ownership for HOV lane accessiblity for someone living in CA with high electricity costs and an old house with bad wiring, the Civic GX wins. Add on long distance driving and I arrived at my PiP.

I guess at the end of the day it comes down to priorities and finances. For example I can't imagine myself spending hard-earned cash on any car that costs less than $15k if I can afford to spend more. Why? Because I don't want to make the compromises that such a car brings. That's why I don't think a civic is comparable. Just because the Prius doesn't have a non-hybrid version doesn't somehow mean that now any car from 0 to 100k is suddenly comparable to it. A Camry or matrix is most comparable imho not just due to price but also due to the features you get on the car and, yes, size.

Interesting.... I like to look at extreme examples to make a point clearer.
Even a bicycle or an ev bicycle or a skateboard can make more financial sense.
They too get the job done getting you from point A to point B.

But then you have to also consider how fast the ride is, how comfortable the ride is, how enjoying the ride is, and do you have access to the technological goodies at your fingertips to make good use of your time while traveling?
And how good do you look like while getting there?... LOL!

Assessing value does comes thru many channels. Sometimes the feel good feeling of knowing your not using much gas is enough.

    Luxury always cost!

Some of us spend big bucks on electric cars, some on luxury cars, and some on sports cars, and they are all more expensive than an economy car.

You can't really compare. Because they serve different purposes and needs.

Btw, to the OP, 2 Priuses is nothing! Back before I sold the 03, we had a total of 4 Priuses in the family lol.

plus I love all the electronic goodies and readouts that a hybrid or EV car brings! But that's just a geek in me!

Now anything besides a hybrid or EV car is boring! I can get in a nice Cadillac and it's boring!

There is some truth in there. My wife and I went out on the first date in my brand new 2006 Prius.

I know. It is the hidden benefit. Girls see qualities in Prius owners they just don't see it others.

When I was dating my wife I had my, and still have, a 2003 Jetta TDI (turbo diesel) station wagon with the 5-speed
manual transmission. She told me she did not like the smell of diesels. When I told her I got over 50 mpg with
it she was impressed and we made many road trips with the Jetta until after we got married and purchased our Prius.

You got lucky, VW Diesel is not exactly a chick magnet, it must have been you good looks that sealed the deal.:)
