My neighbor was shocked I paid 41K for a prius. It's a common reaction.

Do you the PIPA people here get the same reaction?

Also, do you think people in general know that you got an expensive Prius? I tell people it's not about the status symbolism. It's about getting the options you really want. They kind of roll their eyes. lol

Lol of course not. I think to most people Prius costs 25k. I doubt people even realize that a Five w/ATP costs north of 33k. Given how the plugin is barely distinguishable from the regular Prius, yeah, no one will ever think you paid that much.
Re: rolling eyes…yeah, that'll never go away. I remember in an older thread people vehemently tried to tell me how there's no negative connotations with the Prius…yeah, right

For the most part no one notices, if they ask and I say sticker is $32,000 they always say "well thats not bad, no more that a normal car!" :D

people have different standard for 'expensive' car.
my opinion, PiP interior is very cheap compare to other vehicles that are cheaper (camry xle, sonata limited, altima sl etc......)
we are paying for the tech., and being early adopter does come with a price.

my co-workers think i over paid for tech., and should've just stuck with regular prius.

Interesting. I know cars have creeped up in price over the years but most people at my work still purchase $20 something cars. A $25k Prius is a luxurious indulgence. A $32k base PiP is downright stupid. I can only imagine what people would say to a $40k PiPA. Same as to the one guy who bought a Porsche 911 and is not the president of the company.

think of the PiPA as the absolute top of the line Prius on par with an entry level german luxury car. in that case, an upper 30s price in CA (home of prii) doesn't seem out of line. the problem is the non-prius educated who think all prius variants are the same, and similar to accords, camrys etc which are in 20-30k range.

i do think the pricing and lack of distinction is part of the reason for the deep discounts and large inventory of PiPs even here in CA. the low gas prices doesn't help either

My friends who are into cars can appreciate the features of the PIPA but some of them still think I'm crazy for selling my IS350 and getting a Prius.

Tell me about it. A few of my fair weather friends said are you OK? I said yes why do you ask? Well selling a BMW for a Prius. My response is the Prius is optioned to the top & cost almost as much as the Bimmer. It is also a pleasure to drive, more reliable, more efficient, more techno and I am making my contribution to clean emissions.

They're probably the same people who can't believe a Camry/Accord/Fusion etc costs over $30k fully loaded. They think of those cars as rentals and costing in the low-mid $20k's.

I priced out a Volt today in Canada. It's $42,000 base for a 2013. Add some options like BOSE audio, LKA, Forward Collision and heated seats and it's $46k (still no nav or leather added). At least you guys get some incentives. For comparison, a base PiP in Canada is $35k and a PiPA is $40k.

Priuses have a fairly iconic shape and I actually think that the G3 is well executed. I'm obviously waaaaaaaay out in the minority in that opinion but to me many of the other small, front wheel drive, 4-door sedans look like they were designed by the same people.
Jellybean shape. Lots of glass. White lens rear lights...etc...
Most people.....like 99.44 percent of the folks out there can pick a Prius out of the crowd, but there are very very few visual clues that separate a $24,000 G3-deuce from a $41,000 Pip.....and to most people a Prius is a Prius is a Prius, unless you're talking about the new Trial-sized model or the Station wagon.
    YMMV... ;)

Exactly! My mom thought I bought the same sort of Prius as the Gen II Prius, and she's happy about me buying a reliable car that's everywhere on the road. ;)

It's ok, people said the same thing for the new 2012 Odyssey when it came out... $40k+ for a mini-van?!?! Those are usually the same people that think a Camry is still $15K but then turnaround and buy a BMW for $65K :) Simply a matter of perceived status to $ spent.

When I traded our BMW 335 coupe for the Prius my adult son decided I had become senile. After driving it several times he understood the technolgy that just works without fanfare. He also liked the game nature of the driving experience.

I was happy to be done with the BMW twin turbo fear of high maintenance and continued hassles.
