Beverly hills won't mind. There are something like 50 free chargepoints within a quarter mile of there though so I would just go to one of the parking garages.

That is a good point. If you charge into one of these outlets can you be charged by the Police for theft of electricity?

I have 2 outside electric outlets on my home but that is not an inventation for people to use my power.

 

A while ago I remember reading this article that this guy parked his car in front of these peoples house every evening for 2 hours or so. If the homeowner went outside he would just do nothing. She noticed a light from inside the car and after careful examination she noticed he was on a laptop. It creped her out but she thought he would leave after she made it obvious that she was on to him. After 2 weeks of doing this she called Police. They spoke to the guy than arrested him. Evidently the lady had an unsecured internet and this guy was using her internet. The cops arrested the guy for theft of internet. Go Figure. Not sure if his lawyer got it dismissed or not. Not sure if Electricity is the same.

 

While theft from the local government budget is a potential issue, electrical capacity is an even bigger issue. If you are the only one plugging in, and no lighting is currently active, then it should be fine. But two cars plugging in to outlets on the same circuit, or one car plugging in while lights are active, will cause trouble.

 

congress voted on this several years ago ( Internet use ) basically they said any signal traveling thru the airways is available for use. Unless its blocked. Then you can't use it of course. Many people get extremely paranoid if they see a car parked outside, especially if someone is sitting in the car.

Yep perhaps using charging stations as a previous poster said would be best. I would hate to burn a Tree or City Hall, or someones House down to ashes.

 

Do you have a source for this, or the name of the law? It certainly doesn't fit with laws from the late 20th Century, such as the Electronics Communications Privacy Act.

They are probably on a timer and/or a switch.

If you do decide to plug into one of those outlets I would recommend you put a tag on the plug and a sign on your dash explaining how to contact you if needed. If an officer feels you shouldn't be plugged in, the signage should result in them unpluging you and perhaps leaving you a message rather than a fine.

 

All the City owned parking spots have Chargepoint chargers. Most are the ones with 1 J1772 and 1 110v outlet. The lots usually have two of those and 4 EV parking spaces.You are allowed 2 hours free parking in most lots but some are 1hr. I used the one on Cannon tonight while my wife did her physical therapy at Brighton Institute. Its cheaper than using a meter and no risk.

One thing to be careful of. Beverly Hills has the correct signage to enforce tow away for vehicles parked but not charging so they should not be used as pime parking spaces. The signs mean they are almost never ICEd

I pasted your phrase into Google, and received much different answers than you claimed, few newer than when you checked. Most indicated that it is legally ambiguous, not well defined by the courts. One pointed to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, written in 1986 long before WiFi existed, so the extension to wireless connections remained unsettled. Another pointed out that all terms of service of the various parties in the access chain must still be obeyed.

I was quite happy with the post that Congress had passed this law. I realize that there were also many other opinions stated. Mostly irrelevant.

 

I did not find that post, nor anything else pointing to such a law. I must thus dismiss the claim as unfounded hearsay until better evidence is presented.
