    Hi All,

Been lurking for a couple months after getting my 2012 pip and thought I would finally sign up and jump in to the mix. Lot's of great knowledge here and looking forward to being part of the group.

Wanted to start out my first post with a question to you all... After the first couple weeks with the pip, my first Prius by the way, I started to notice a slight speckle in the windshield and side glass depending on the angle to the morning sun (most noticeable in the morning and late afternoon light).

After agonizing over if I was indeed being too picky I called the salesman and was referred to the service mgr. He had me bring it in... insisting that he wanted me to be completely satisfied with my new purchase. After looking at the glass he said that he had seen this before and that when he talked to Toyota about this, was told that "it was a characteristic of the Prius glass" with these small specs being in between the glass laminations and comes this way from the factory". He kept the car for a day and had the detail shop "buff" the glass and treat with Rain-X that he said would partially fill the imperfections and make them less visible. I left the car thinking that if these were in the glass laminations, how will treating the surface correct the problem. When I picked it up it was indeed better but over the last few weeks it is starting to return. I guess I need to get a bottle of Rain-X...

I just wanted to ask the group if anybody else has seen this speckling of the windshield and side glass? It almost looks like pitting from being in a sandstorm. I sort of think the dealership might be feeding me BS as I'm sure Toyota doesn't want to start replacing glass. I also didn't want to be a whiner with this but... paying close to 40k for a car I want to be happy in every way.

I also intend to go back to the dealer and look at some other 2012 pip's still on the lot and see what they are like.

Thanks for your advise. Looking forward to your replies...

    Mike

Thanks bisco... yeah, not sure what to think but checking out the other cars on the lot seems to be the thing to do for now. My car defiantly has a problem that others have seen as well. It just bugs the he** out of me depending on the light and time of day. We'll see...

I don't have this problem. But my window triples light sources and it can make it hard to see at night if there are a bunch of lights in your path.

Surprisingly enough, cleaning the interior surface of the glass fixes 60-70% of the issue for me. Maybe try picking up a bottle of stoners glass cleaner, and see if a sparkling clean windshield feels safer.

All Prius come with HSEA (High Solar Energy Absorbing) glass, to keep out the heat and reduce the greenhouse effect in the cabin.

Perhaps what you are seeing is due to that. I also noticed something when I have my polarized sunglasses on.

So why do folks put after-market tinting on their Prius, as discussed at length in this forum?

    Mike-

Please file a complaint with NHTSA - Toyota is brushing off these windshield issues and none of us are getting anywhere. The issue is being called a characteristic (seems someone programmed them to say it) and they are refusing to take action. Only if enough of us complain (like we did with the braking issue on the first 2010s) will Toyota take action. :(

I'm coming upon 20K in my own PHEV and I haven't noticed anything either. I'm dark tinted all the way around but my windshield isn't...

It's not tree sap. Toyota tried to pull that explanation on one of my repair attempts. The windshield was cleaned by the dealer with clay to ensure sap was not the cause. In addition, if the issue is there, its there from delivery... I can't stress this enough - Toyota has verified there is something here and its being called a "characteristic" of the car... The funny thing is that characteristics are usually present in all copies of the car, yet that isn't the case here.

    Mike,

You said that after the Rain-X treatment, it seemed to be better until the Rain-X wore off.
Can you run a slow stream of water from a hose down the windshield and does it affect the speckles?
Then you would know that it's surface flaws and not glass laminations.

Then you could go to a company that does windshield repairs and get their opinion.

Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions. Going to try to make it to the dealer tomorrow morning and look at other cars. I'll report back. It was the service director that I worked with on my first visit. He was the one that said the issue was in the manufacturing process and they all "come that way from the factory".

The Rain-X treatment he said was just a fix to hide the imperfections. He also mentioned that they did a clay bar treatment to the glass as well polished with a buffer. Never heard of polishing a glass windshield with a buffer but... hey... what do I know.

Where the problem is most visible is about 1-1 1/2 hours after sunrise and the car is headed directly in the sun. Looks as if it had been in a sandstorm and the small speckles really stand out. As the sun gets higher through the day you have a harder time seeing it. Not visible at night at all. When sun is directly 90 degrees to the left or right the same issue is visible in the side windows.

Believe me... I have cleaned the glass both inside and out several times before I first took it in as I didn't want to have the embarrassment of a dirty windshield fix my problem.

Thanks again to you all! Ill report back after meeting with my salesman tomorrow morning and looking at the other cars.

I had the "tree sap" like issue on my 8 mile Prius pip when I got it in September. It was only on my windshield. It felt bumpy and the windshield wipers were making a rough sound when they were on. In some light situations, I saw all the little dots. It was uniform and clearly on the windshield. I took a razor blade at an angle and scraped a small spot, then felt it, it was smooth compared to the rest of the windshield, so I scraped the whole windshield, lubricating with windex as I scraped. Windshield wipers don't sound like they are traveling over sandpaper and I have not noticed the dots since. I was thinking it might be some covering material they put on the car for import?

Yup, they make glass polish and use a buffer to apply it sometimes. I have used glass polish and it's great, though I never needed to use a buffer, I just applied it by hand.

I only had two problems with the glass. The first was where the dealer scratched the heck out of the left rear glass, taking off a sticker. I had them change it. The other was a build-up of wax right where the right wiper blade stops in front of the driver. I used Eastwood's Rhodite and lightly hand polished the wax off and it's nice and clear when it rains now.
