This morning, outside temp was 41F:

    Battery Temps: 58.7F / 61.47F / 60.55F
    Engine Coolant Temp: 48.2F
    MG1 Temp: 50F
    MG2 Temp: 48.2F
MG1 Inverter Temp: 59F (not sure about these, seems kind high for the morning)
    MG2 Inverter Temp: 59F
    HV Battery Discharge Control: -10.73HP

ICE started up about 21 seconds after leaving the first stop sign I come to in my morning commute.

    MG1 RPM: -4635
    OBD2 Speed: 40.39 MPH

    Battery Temps: 58.7F / 61.66F / 60.55F
    ECT: 48.2F
    MG1 Temp: 50F
    MG2 Temp: 51.8F
    MG1 and MG2 Inverter Temp: 59F
    HV Battery Discharge Control: -13.41HP

There was NO regen at all after leaving the Stop sign and prior to the ICE starting.

Leaving the house now for my drive to work.. so we'll see what happens.

The days of us having simple parameters to observe are over. The criteria & responses are becoming sophisticated, squeezing out emission & efficiency opportunities too small & abundant to easily observe... even with a mild region like your own. Try something hostile, like my commute this morning warming up the engine going 70 mph with the outside temp at 9°F.

if it is excess regen (and i'm not yet convinced it is) it has to be temp related because i've made the exact same commute since april and the ice did not start until a few weeks ago when it eas in the 40's outside.

The negative number should be Charge Control. I informed Vincent and he agreed as well.

Perhaps that first stop sign exceeded 10.73 hp regen? Why did it take 21 seconds? I don't know. See if that makes sense by trying to reproduce it.

I John, just my 2 cents, todays round trip commute 15.2 miles, 11 degrees, car set to EV, heat @ 65 degrees, fan speed @ 2, still had 3.2 miles of electric left, 109 mpg :)

great info track, thank you. what was the grade after the stop sign?

  8. You have to put the car in ready first. Simulated driving doesn't count.

Tracksyde -- I live in SoCal too. I got up this morning to go to the gym. It was COLD outside. I put my bun warmers on in the car and drove very happily to the gym (about 1 mile away) all on EV -- no ICE startup. After my workout I drove around a few more places -- no ICE startup. Since I've finished work last week and I'm just putting around town this week, I have been on EV for 98% of my driving (except for the times when I run out of range).

I haven't seen anybody complaining about that in this thread. If this thread has evolved into a discussion about excess regen I'm in the wrong place.

Ok, second trip this morning leaving my house, outside temp 41F:
(The ICE started during my first trip - about an 40 minutes prior - so all my temps should be higher)

    Battery Temps: 62.03F / 65.32F / 63.86F
    Engine Coolant Temp: 80.6F
    MG1 Temp: 68F
    MG2 Temp: 66.2F
MG1 Inverter Temp: 59F (same as the first trip this morning)
    MG2 Inverter Temp: 59F
    HV Battery Discharge Control: -11.4HP

ICE started up about 22 seconds after leaving the first stop sign

    MG1 RPM: -4967
    OBD2 Speed: 41.01 MPH

    Battery Temps: 62.21F / 65.5F / 64.04F
    ECT: 78.8F
    MG1 Temp: 68F
    MG2 Temp: 69.8F
    MG1 Inverter Temp: 66.2F
    MG2 Inverter Temp: 62.6F
    HV Battery Discharge Control: -14.08HP

There was NO regen at all after leaving the Stop sign and prior to the ICE starting.
So.. leaving the house the 2nd time this morning, all my temps look more moderate.. the temps all look like they'd be similar to what I'd expect in Spring/early Summer.

So, I'm thinking now the temperatures I'm logging (battery, MG1/Mg2, and the inverters) have nothing to do with this "not-so-easily-explained" ICE starting situation I'm seeing in lower temperatures.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable on the inner workings of the HSD can chime in and point me in another direction in terms of data logging.

But so far, the only things that really stand out to me are:

    1. Something about 40MPH when its colder (colder being say, any outside temp lower than 45F, for example)
    2. Possibly something about MG1's RPMs at or around 5000RPM

(I guess MG1's speed while in EV would always be dependent on vehicle speed, but what I'm saying is - it could either be speed related or RPM related, but not necessarily both)

Grade? Um.. I do not know :).. with the SoC I typically leave the 1st Stop sign with, the grade is definitely enough to trigger "excess regen ICE starting".. BUT since this has been happening, I've been pretty careful about not getting into regen territory. I'd post my data, but posting raw data seems to make people's eye glaze over and skip the rest of my posts :D

But I can assure you, this morning, both trips, there was no regen at all after leaving the Stop sign and prior to the ICE starting.

For those who want some data.. when I left the Stop sign, battery pack current was +44.47 Amps.. steadily increasing up to +73.8 Amps (+16 seconds).. when the ICE came on, current was +58.16 Amps.. never any regen within those 22 seconds (time from Stop sign to ICE start).

Oh, and my SoC was at 83.14% when the ICE started (both trips). In both cases, AFTER the ICE started, SoC went up to 84.31% before starting to decline for the rest of the trip.

when i left today, it was 45 degrees. i hit the top of my hill at 20 mph. fortunately, no one behind me. i kept the hsi just to the right of regen. enough, that i knew i wasn't recharging, but little enough that i wasn't picking up too much speed. when i hit the bottom of the hill, i was going 42 mph and i kept the hsi to the right to hold my speed. it's uphill from there and once i get past the bottom it doesn't seem to be an issue. ice never came on.

Likewise, I went down my hill in neutral, using the actual friction brakes to stop at the stop signs. Hit the flat level part and when I got to 45 mph ... no ICE. It seems like we might be onto something with a delayed reaction to regen, but I can't figure out why the Prius would wait for a while to fire up the ICE to burn off excess charge. Perhaps it only queries the SOC every 30 seconds or something?

looks like more detective work for track. the confusing thing for me is what ny_rob is experiencing on flat ground and low speeds.
