I've noticed that my new Prius Plug In won't always lock and unlock using the touch sensor on the door handle. The manual states that when this occurs to use two fingers and touch both the top and bottom of the handle at the same time. This does not work either.
Problem seems to occur when in busy shopping center parking lots where other vehicles have similar systems? Once the car is back in my driveway or in the parking lot at work, the sensor works fine.
Has anyone else experienced this? Could it have something to do with RF interference in the immediate area of my car? Is this a latent 'security feature' not really addressed in the manual? Please comment.

I've never experienced this in any of my 3 Prius. The little indented strips on the handle (top and bottom) are only for locking the door when touched with the tip of the finger(s). The unlocking occurs when you grab the whole handle from the strip behind the door handle. As for interference affecting it's operation, I guess it is probable but I just find it unlikely. I live in NYC where there are plenty chances for interference from multiple sources and I've just never had this happen, but who knows...

Was the handle wet at all the times it did not work? I do not know, grasping at straws.

The sensor also does not work well if wearing gloves.

I find when it's not working to tap harder with your index finger on the sensor in the door handle. And sometimes that doesn't work, but that's rare for me tho.

I only use one finger on the top of the handle, right on the marks, for locking. Never seems to be a problem locking, and I just grasp the handle in the normal way to unlock and open the door. I admit I didn't read the manual on this part, it just seemed intuitive.:)

I had issues unlocking a few times...but it usually seems to happen when I quickly run up to the car and pull the handle...but a second pull always works.

You can't lock and unlock using the same sensor. Lock and unlock are two different sensors. The unlock sensor is behind the door handle. Effectively, pulling the door handle unlocks the door. The lock sensors are the two locations on top and bottom of the door handle.

I can certify that the unlock trigger doesn't always work with winter gloves, that's the only anomaly I found about it.
I thing the big factor here is , human intervention.

This site is so educational. The unlock function works unerringly when I'm in proximity to the PIP. I had this feature also on my Gen II level 6. But this is much better and quicker. I had to wait a half a second sometimes for my old car. This always beats me to the handle. What I learned this morning is that I can lock the PIP by touching the sensor on the top and I do not need to dig the fob out of my pocket. Way cool. Thanks PCers.

Also to expand your knowledge, a not to be repetitive, there are "2" unlock sensors, the one you are referring to, on top and the other one on the underside of the door handles.
And while talking about the lock/unlock functions, the rear hatch door has a large rectangular pad to unlatch the rear door and next to it to the right, an small round one to lock all doors.

Did not know that either. We tend to get satisfied with good stuff not realizing that there is great stuff if one takes the time to listen and learn. There is so much cool about this car and the discoveries keep coming. Thanks again.

And, as has been mentioned countless times before, many questions can be answered simply by looking through the manual. Tons of good stuff in there.

Sometimes I have found when the sensor isn't working for me, that my iPhone might be too close proximity with the fob, and then when I move my cell phone away, the sensor works for me.

Same thing, when I am in the car and if my phone is laying on top of the fob in the cup holder, sometimes I get a message saying key not found . . . and when I move the iPhone away, the message goes away.
