Well keep in mind that regen starts happening as soon as you let off the gas, even when on flat ground. It's like engine braking on a regular car.

right. when i leave my house, i go up a slight grade to 20 mph. when i crest the hill, i coast with foot off the pedal to the end of the street. i lose .2 miles ev range going up and regen it back going down. the ice has never come on in this first part of the trip. maybe the low speed? who knows. i went out today, garage was 48 degrees, air temp was 34. did my slow and steady routine down the large hill and the ice didn't fire. of course, i'm not sure it would fire at 34 degrees no matter how i drive it. so much experimenting to do.

yes you are correct. When I have left work and made it to the bottom of the hill and turned onto a neighborhood street to power down the car (to turn off the ICE) upon turning the car back on the sg2 says the soc was 89% so it does delay a bit.

I believe we are all experiencing the ICE turning on while we are under power with the HSI bar displaying some on the consumption side while on relatively level street at 40 - 45 mph. It seems as though the common denominator is having some regen take place with a high SOC and 30 seconds or a minute prior to the ICE starting.

bisco and Tracksyde are definitely seeing ICE firing prior to load

managed to keep it off again today, but it was 37, so not sure if it was my fine driving or the temp.

It's to the point where I can predict the spot where the ICE will fire within a couple hundred feet. It's on the level going 40 - 45 mph with the bar about 1/5 - 1/4 into the load side and 14+ miles on the EV range, but it's about 30 seconds after the last stop sign at the bottom of the hill. If I coast the hill in neutral the ICE doesn't fire in the usual spot, but if I regen going down the hill, the ICE will start on cue.

My question is how I can charge the car to something like 95% so that the regen leaving my house doesn't trigger the whole warmup cycle.

I'm kind of amazed that I was able to provide part of the diagnosis and an actual solution to your problem. Neutral it is!
As far as your question is concerned, there's no real way to do this. The best you could do is get a heavy-duty timer into which you plug your EVSE and set it to turn off just prior to a full charge (so perhaps 2h40m for 110 V?). That's about it.

if you play around with start or end time, you should be able to get close to 95% after some experimenting. the interesting part is that the last few drops take quite a while and will take some figuring out. i don't have a scangauge, but i find that when the screen says i have another half hour to charge completion, i'm only a few tenths short of full.

Are you talking about recharge from HV mode? I've yet to see under 3 hours for that.

recharge when EV remaining is .9 miles or less takes 2 hours and 34 minutes for me.

Really? 2h40m is the longest I've ever seen with EV totally depleted.

One reason for a difference in charging time could be the voltage level. It is usually around 120V but in some homes it could be 110 and if other devices are on the same circuit it could even dip down to 100V. The charging current will be limited at 12A so the wattage charging the car could vary from 1200 to 1500 and over the course if charging a PiP that could easily throw off charge times by a few minutes.

A related effect applies at "240V" charging since larger buildings with charging stations are often wired to supply around 208V rather than the 240V used in single family homes.

As I mentioned earlier when I leave I take a left out of my drive way. I go about .3 miles at 30 MPH. I then take a right on to a 45 MPH zone at a slight down grade for about .4 miles which turns into a steeper down grade for about .3 miles to a stop light. At this point the road goes up a steep grade for about .5 miles. The ICE never starts even at 3 degrees.

In the summer I would go to the right out of my drive way to go to our land and cut wood and things. The ICE never started.

Well today things were different. I went this way for the first time in a couple months to have some coffee. I pulled out of my heated garage, 50 degrees, out into the 3 degree weather, took a right out of my driveway and went down a moderate hill for .2 miles across a small bridge and started up the other side. The ICE came on almost right away upon acceleration (less than half acceleration). This never happened in the summer!

I always set my charger to be done about ½ to 1 hour before I leave the house. Forgot, all settings off.

Just thought you might be interested, so you could add this to your thought process. :)

My ICE fired up at .2 miles out from my house @ 32mph on level pavement with the HSI at about 30%.
It was 26 deg when I left home this morning with a full charge, it was in the low 20's overnight- my car sits outside... temp control set to "LO", no fan on, seat heaters off.
    More data to ponder...

Mine did too. But at just 9ºF outside, that tends to make sense. There's no real question of the need for a heater with it that cold outside. The end result of that morning commute was 103 MPG. No complaints with the engine starting with results like that.
